Wife took her car to the dealership for a steering issue. The service reps sent me a text with necessary repairs.
Car needs a new battery and ground strap. $400.
Engine air and cabin air filters were a month old. Mechanic said they needed changing. $200
Spark plugs were changed 15,000 ago. Mechanic said they needed replacing. The dealership change for six new plugs was quoted at over $9000! I know that includes coils and wires. Local shop charged about $600 last year.

I suppose the shop quotes might cause some owners to think that maybe they should just trade cars rather than drop $10,000 in a car with 118,000 miles. I don’t fault the mechanic. He was going by the odometer and never looked at the plugs or filters. Everybody has a boss, and he was probably doing his job exactly as he was trained.

Service tech said he would handle it with the mechanic. The tech was very embarrassed by the filter recommendations.

Buyer beware.

I never go to dealerships for service.

I made an error. The spark plug quote was $930, not $9300. Still high.i paid about $630 at a local shops and they a year ago.

Like WI Outdoors stated, I also avoid dealership services. I went to two local shops and they said the electric power steering needed codes that only the dealerships have. The closest Lexus dealer is 65 miles. We have a very large Toyota dealership. Many Toyota cars also have electronic PS. The Toyota dealership said they could not warranty work performed on a Lexus.

Buyer beware.

I would post that as a review on Google. Probably the service rep trying to sell stuff then threw the mechanic under the bus

Stealership is my term for them

They quote labor based on "book time"
Not sure how they calculate the time needed to change spark plugs on a certain vehicle but you can bet in 95% of the cases it takes a mechanic half that time.

The mechanic I use charges by actual time and his rate is considerably less than the stealership

They get warranty work (which the mechanic gets paid closer to actual time from what the mechanics I know have told me) paid closer to actual time it takes.
Funny how when the payment is coming from the dealership they change the labor time up.

Local ford dealer told my wife she needed new front brakes and rotors. Rotors were fine. Looked like he used a screwdriver to to chip a pad. Cost was several hundred. I bought new pads and replaced them. Way less than the several hundred dealer wanted. If your able, plugs. filters, oil changes, tire rotations etc. are best done yourself. Lots of you tube videos on the simple stuff. Videos on the more time consuming also.

At the same dealership several years ago I agreed on a price of a car with a salesman. Went inside and they started adding stuff to tune of several thousand dollars. I said no. Salesman promptly tells me they have to charge everyone those addons or previous customers would sue them. I blew up. wife took my arm and lead me out. Salesman chased after me saying they could could change the paperwork to reflect the agreed on price. I kept going. Crooked as a dogs hind leg. All of them.

I've had the same thing happen Danny. And walked out. I despise sales managers. Ain't buying their crap and tell them when I walk in. They still get mad.

Wife has a 350. She took it to the dealer once and after that I found an independent import shop. The owner lives close to me and gave me permission to trap his place.
