If your going to be hunting out of a stand or however where you can take you time and make a nice shot legit anything that will expand some and just put it where the red dot is

DO NOT try and shoot them like a deer . Their organs are lower and more far forward. Lotta the stuff about them being super hard to kill and needing a cannon for em are from deer guys who use the same style shot placement and it just not hitting what it needs .. the are tough but definitely don't need a 300wm like so many trya and say

But yeah no one around here really use anything fancy. usually get the cheapest soft or hollow points and shoot them in that red spot. The thermal guys making running shots and stuff are the main one likeing the fancy stuff ... But yeah I'd say just get something like .243 and up just grab a HP or SP that shoots good and break that neck

Agree, don't overthink it. Trapped hogs are killed all the time with 22lr/22wmr, it's knowing where to put it that matters. Fancy bullets are only needed if you're pushing some sort of limit like extreme range, smaller calibers, subsonic, etc. Otherwise any common deer capable projectile will suffice if you put it where it needs to go.

Pig anatomy differs from deer. The cervical spine/neck runs lower more on the centerline, the arteries as well run lower.

Any bullet used for deer will get the job done. Exception is Russian boar. Their sheld is very thick. I prefer 30 cal and larger.
Raise in Florida and hunted hogs extensively. My choice was a Ruger 44 mag. carbine. Loaded with my own Sierra 240 grain JHC.
I didnt like trailing hogs in Florida swamps. Usually DRT with shoulder hit.
Now for S.C. hogs, my trusty .308, 150 grain fusion i handload and shoulder shots. No tracking involved.

How are you hunting them? If from a stand where you can place your shot, most calibers will suffice. When thermal hunting and walking up on a bunch at night, I prefer AR style rifle and .450 Bushmaster or .308

With propper shot placement a wide range of projectiles work but I'm partial to soft points in the 120 - 180 grain weight moving fast. They drop where they stood.

.25-06, 270, 30-06 are my tried and trues.

Wife and I anchored a couple with our 6.5 Grendel’s when we were in Florida this spring.

Yeah I am going after Russians, was thinking about using my 6.5 Creedmoor loaded up with Nosler Partitions or Barnes TSX for more penetration and weight retention.

Forget the heart/lung shot and shoot for the red dot as wolfdog posted

Any legit deer caliber will penetrate the "shield" (it is not kevlar lol) but that gristle and fat will seal the hole and it makes them difficult to trail

Your 6.5 should be adequate for any pig on the continent
