I normally don't encounter many snakes other than garter snakes. Any ideas what this is? It was in central MN. Whatever it is I hope it eats mice.

Used to know an old man that commercial fished the Missouri river for years. 30's to the 60's. Called them sand cobras. Was scared to death of them. Insisted they were poisonous. I found out one day when we were pole fishing. I grabbed the snake after telling him it was harmless and he backed up. When I picked it up he was almost in a panic. Even after I laid it down, rolled it over so he could see it roll over on it's back again he was still scared. I tossed it in the river and it came alive again and swam off. He insisted we go home, angry I hadn't killed it and worried it was going to "sneak up on us".

100% Spreading Adder also called hognose snake. They are mildly venomous.

Yep hog nose, their rather neat snakes and have never bitten anyone that I know of even when they have been teased by a little kid, they do have a box of tricks to make you leave them alone from puffing themselves up, flattering their neck and hissing like a leaky steam engine, and then there?s rolling over and playing dead

I kept a friendly one as a pet several years ago, while there toad catching specialists they do eat other things, and they do have fangs in the back of their mouths that have a venom specifically for toads

I used to see several every summer as a kid and could find one almost any day I wanted to but it?s been years since I?ve seen one, most of the places I knew you could. Easily find one are suburban lawns now. they seem to prefer sandy soils over heavier clay of muddy ones
