It seems that the ones in favor of Data centers are either investing in them
Or they just like them because they make your job easier, which most likely means that your job can be done by the AI.
Just something to think about

So how much has your property tax increased?

They have gone up every year and moving faster with the increased development. Doubled in the last maybe 6 years. All the development is not just data center to be fare. We have a huge industrial development center building on the old ammunition plant, farms are also being sold off and broken down into housing developments.
They have built a lot of very large apparmtment complexes and many subdivisions as well.
All contrubuit to increased property value and therefore taxes.

Data Centers are needed to run the computing software we are using today for personal, business, and government systems. I am currently reading a book about AI. It is fascinating what it can do.

Going to be a learning curve for all of us. We are already using AI in many areas.

All the new data centers that are being built should supply their own power and recycle water. If a town allows them within a mile of homes and doesn't get big money from the builders of said data centers you need new people in charge. There was a town that got 1.5 billion I believe and they built new everything and taxes dropped 72%.

The only reason that communities throughout the U.S.A. should not want Data Centers is if they want to end up being backwards and poor. If they want to be successful and rich, with far lower taxes and jobs all over the place, let Data Reign. The good news is that there are plenty of other places that want them. If we kill the Golden Goose, you will only have yourselves to blame. China could not be happier with this anti Data Center movement. Actually, they can’t believe it is happening! President DJT

I think data center would work ok in all the malls that are about abandoned around the country. Retro fit the building or tear them down. Would be a good use of the space.

If you were 30 years older you'd have been sitting in a bar in the 90s talking to your buddies about how all this WWW stuff was a hoax and it would never go anywhere...... lol.

I'm with you. I'm not opposed to data centers or technology but acting like they're going to save us from China and decades of poor financial decisions is optimistic & moronic. "They" are starting to use the covid framing for the conversation "if you dont mask up, take the vaccine and stay in side your endangering everyone and part of the problem"

Now it's "if you oppose data centers your the reason for the national debt and china's rise, you're endangering the rest of us"

I'm not buying it. Data centers are so corporations can monetize you better. Your 6 year old getting advertisements for a new gadget near their birthday is what we need data centers. Politicans are just pissin down our backs and telling us it's raining trying to sell this as national defense and economic efficiency

Donner is right.

Well, I guess that's one way to look at it. I live in a very rural area..... and if someone here were willing to sell a piece of their farm land to build a data center, I would be all for it. It would no doubt result in energy grid upgrades. Then maybe my power would not go out every other day. The taxes generated might even make enough money to fill in some of the foot deep pot holes on my road.
More likely to happen is your property taxes will increase along with yout electric and possible water bill depending on what type of cooling system they use.. the data center will get huge tax breaks and only infustructer improvements will be what would directly benefit the data center.

Will get a small bump in jobs for construction and to the local economy during but once on line the full time jobs are not many and highly specialized. So those higher paid people will bring their money buy up land and drive up property values some more.
Similar to what the tec industry has been doing when they move the jobs out of the unbuisness friendly California but bring the work force with them to business friendly states. They bring their larg bank acounts with them then vote and try to chane where they moved into what they just left.

And you may end up with light, water, and noise pollution. Depending on the system implemented.

I agree keep them in the city.
Kind of like I dont understand why they are not puting solar farms over shoping center parking lots and roofs installed of on good agricultural land.. the electricity would be able to be used very near or right where its produced and parking under shade of solar panels seems positive to me.

I could be missing something but I do have 2 data center going up and a 3rsd being proposed 2 within 8 miles or so of me the other within 35.
But I've been told that even sheep grazing under those solar panels are getting radiation poisoning and should not be used for human consumption. Same source tells me Michelle Obama is a guy. When I gave a doubtful reply, she showed me evidence for both in black and white on her phone and we were in church, so both must be true!

When we were working during 2020 and 21 everyone was seemingly working from home. Apparently working from home is code for sitting in a lawn chair watching me work with an occasional 10 minute "meeting". It became obvious to me many people perform minimal work which includes many college educated and high income earners. Those jobs will absolutely be replaced by AI or foreign workers and that will have an impact. I don't however believe AI is going to be the end all be all its being sold as. Maybe I am just a luddite but I fail to believe the claims coming from the real AI believers that it is going to fix our financial issues and secure our defense while also being your best friend and giving you special massages every night.

A $2 book on Amazon will tell you a lot about AI. The title is "Quite Possibly the Best Introduction to AI". I downloaded it to my iPad but it may be available in paperback. I am a little more than half way through it and will finish it tonight. It kept me up until midnight last night.

I suggest this for anyone who is doubtful that AI will be a benefit to them.

AI believer here.

AI will positively NOT "fix all our financial issues"...... not a chance. It will boost GDP but that is a far cry from fixing our issues.

AI will eliminate jobs sure...... while creating others... would I be paying for a Masters if I thought it would be worthless down the road??

Secure our defense? Not sure what you mean here........ but I DO believe it's kinda important that our AI capability exceeds China's.......

Inflation will boost GDP.

If we fall behind China in AI capability we can always just copy them, how many Trillions do we need to spend to make sure we stay 3 days ahead of China in the AI race?

Like I said, I'm not against Data centers or AI, I think the capabilities are being overblown. It will be the excuse corporations use to trim the fat that already exist in the ranks. It will certainly change some fields in ways I can't imagine but for the most part I think we will be on a different bandwagon in 5 years, maybe global warming again, or windtowers, solar, maybe coal shall shine agian, nuclear fusion, desalination plants...

And to add to the conversation, a new golf course uses way more water than a data center.
But golf courses generally don’t get shot down in communities like data centers do. Go figure.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

It's just straight up ignorance.

Most everyone on here would support data centers......if they could only understand........
