Spinning reels on fly rods

So I've seen this a few times and have heard folk talk about it in passing but never really seen like a detail discussion on the matter. Mainly seen older black people doing it . Fly rod with a spinning reel and primarily they where going after some sort of panfish usually. Apparently the fly rods where super sensitive, beyond other things and with the spinning reel you could play a fish extremely well for as light as it was . Even seen bill dance use a version of it with a closed faced reel for crappie . But as I said never seeing a real detailed discussion on the matter . So anyone know much about it ? Done it ? I'm at the point that in considering trying it next time we go to the spill way . That or see if I can catch the old guy I've seen there from time to time doing it and see if I can talk his head off

I personally knew several relatives who used closed-face spinning/spinncasting reels on fly rods for trout fishing. Back in the summer of 63 my driver training teacher who was the 1st Bullock Creek High School football coach and our neighbor took me trout fishing a couple of times and that was his setup as well. The coach went on to develop a special steelhead rod called the “noodle rod” and traveled the world selling them. His rods were a big deal back in that time in wherever steelhead were fished. Dick Swan was his name.

Everybody who used fly rods set-up like I described used crawlers on trout streams, tight trout streams so they had to flip the crawler in tight spots, under brush, etc. The reels were used free-spool and not used for casting. Swan used a Shakspeare under-spin reel when I fished with him. The relatives just used cheap Zebco 303s and used them as bought. Even with the mono looking like it was as thick as chalkline, they really caught some dandy brown trout.
I should point out that none of these people cast with the fly rods!.

I tried it years ago. I didn't like it, the eyes on a fly rod are made differently, they lay very close to the rod and causes there to be a lot of friction as the line drags along the rod, especially when the line is wet. it greatly effects how far you can cast and reduces the accuracy of the cast. A spinning rod's eyes are elevated off of the rod and keep the line from dragging.

Too many eyelets on a flyrod to cast very far with a spinning reel. They will reach a long ways when you have to sneak on trout in creeks without being seen.

8' flyrods with small Pflueger spinning reels on them 4 pound test mono are my Yellow Perch rods.When the jumbos are just mouthing the bait like they often do,,I can feel them every time when others using regular rods can not.

Get a better fight out of any fish that way.

Only cast what the length of the rod is. Free spooled line.

Dad taught as as kids to just use line long enough to reach where you wanted it to go, and use your fingers to walk the line back until you got a hit.
Seldom used the reel to bring the line in.
Would get just so much in the hand, and drop it in the water, after a catch, pick up the loose line, and let out jut enough to match the length of the pole.
Mostly river fishing for trout .

I use one like that for years, but I put regular spinning rod eyelets in them with 4 pound test yellow stren so I can see the line. 2 pound is too limp and when wet sticks to the rod = it is always wet. I can cast a single salmon egg a good distance and hold the rod up high to keep the line out of the water until the very tip end just goes straight down. Now with the price of salmon eggs I use just a kernel of corn most of the time. I tie my hooks usually size 10 or 12 up on 2 pound mono three feet long ahead of time. I get lots of trout......jk

Anytime I've seen a spinning reel on a fly rod it is used more for flipping, than casting. Seen guys use them for panfish, stream trout and steelhead. Not uncommon to see.
Seldom - Dick Swan met with a Trout Unlimited youth group I used to be part of back in the day. Used to meet in the basement of Memorial Presbyterian church. Quite a guy. Me and my buddies all had "Dick Swan signature series" noodle rods shortly after that! Would've been early 90's
Those rods were great for steelhead and salmon in the rivers. The feel and ability to use 6-8# line for 20# fish was awesome. I’m really happy to hear Rusty, that someone on this Board met & knew him as well! He and his family lived just kitty-corner across the section of me. Our country driver’s ed car was a 63, canary yellow Corvair, 3 on the floor. To see a big man like Dick crawl in the front seat was something we all laughed at!
