Not to hijack the CWD thread so how many bait deer? I never have and don't see the point in where I hunt. The whole area is a big food plot with all the corn, beans and alfalfa on the surrounding land along with oak trees. I'm in farm country here. If I didn't hunt in wooded pasture with a cattle herd maybe I'd plant some sugar beets or something along that line in a food plot but as I said there's no point with the cattle here. If I threw out a salt block the cows would have it gone in no time. It's also not legal to bait deer here because of CWD. I wonder if the deer know they aren't supposed to lick the salt or eat the corn that's set out for the cattle when the pasture gets short in the fall??

Now down south I've seen pictures of the game feeders set up to dispense corn or whatever to bring the deer in just like running silage in a bunk for cattle up here on a feedlot. The deer get trained to come in when it's feeding time. According to the CWD scientist baiting deer is a huge spreader of CWD as it is transferred through saliva deer to deer. Planting gardens in the woods would also be a spreader of CWD with logical thinking. The deer would be eating on the same food source in close contact with one another.

Valid points to ponder. So who here does it?

Cannot do that here. Feeding deer here has been outlawed.

Do the wardens fine the deer eating under an apple tree?
What about a corn spill from the picker, do they fine the farmers

I do. Filled all my tags first morning soon as it was legal. I do like to hunt but its a great way to get meat, which was my goal. Feeder is a simple affair. 4 feet of plastic 10 inch pipe attached to a 2 foot square piece of ply wood. Two notches cut in the bottom of the pipe 180 degrees across from each other. Dump in corn and set a five gallon bucket in the top to keep rain out. Corn dribbles out. Doesn't get ate up fast. I start feeding about two weeks before the season opens.

I live in the south - and baiting is a way of life down here, where corn and other feed is bought by the ton just for deer food. In fact, my home state of AR was the first state not to ban baiting when cwd was found. Their reasoning was, we want to reduce deer density and baiting makes it easier to kill deer.

A large portion of AR does not have row crops. It is largely a timbered state. Cover is everywhere. Baiting is a means used to get deer out of cover, as is running deer with dogs - in many parts of the state. Many hunters also hunt with buckshot.

I plant about 30 acres of food plots and I run about six feed locations on 400 acres

They couldn't do much for hunting under a natural food source. But I bet if you went to hunt spilled corn or grain pile you would get fined.

Baiting is illegal here...and yet tons of corn is bought for...something..

I may have baited a few times on private property...I coffee can a day is all it takes to lure deer out of the brush...or so I'm told... cool

Mississippi and those southern states have baited deer for years and years and they have a lower rate of CWD then we have here with little to no baiting

We in the North should Understand our laws are preceded over by Left leaning criminals
& others have laws that are bipartisan and generational... Our way in the north is not their way. In the south, their laws are their laws. And as long as they follow those laws, then we should not care

I resemble this remark^^^^lol

I have close to 10 acres of plots and 3 mechanical feeders on 400 acres. I also distribute corn at several other stand locations with a tailgate spreader on the Honda.

I don't own the land. I've had it leased for 26 years. Timber company owner allows me to do what I want (except for the timber management, obviously). They even let me do prescribed fire based on pine stand age/conditions (entire tract (except for 85 acres of wetlands) was clearcut about 5 years ago, so no fire again for a few more years.)

When Georgia legalized hunting deer over bait it actually started saving more deer than it caused to be killed.....especially older bucks. They patterned it quickly!

I do. I don't like hunting deer but I like eating them.

No need to.

That's what the CWD experts say so if you bait you can't be to worried about CWD.

I ran a feeder and a food plot , when my son was younger and couldn’t climb a tree yet! And also , my father n law , hunted on corn and food plots when he was older and had a harder time getting around. I think it has its place!

Nothing, food plots make people feel better but the only other thing is the deer might start using the food plot faster but if you bait all year it's the same thing
