Can I plant my asparagus crowns in the fall rather than wait till spring?

October and November are two of the best months to plant asparagus.

Keep them well watered before freeze up and layer the top with straw, leaves or bark as a mulch for the winter. If you have any aged manure mix that in with the dirt.

Two nights ago I watched two does walk into my asparagus patch and commence to cleaning nearly all the red seed pods off the asparagus plants. Thankfully, I already harvested some pods and have the seeds drying out for next spring. To this point, i have only planted crowns in the spring, but Id like to try starting some from seed.

I have dug wild asparagus a couple times and the root system is way bigger then the crowns you buy. It was not that deep, but over three feet across anyway. I would say the sandier the ground you dig them the better, so the sand would fall out. If you get a chunk of dirt 8-12 inches thick and three foot across it is heavy. It may not matter if you cut the roots taking a smaller amount. I don't know.

I have done it a few times when the seed pods are deep red late in the fall. Ii never had any luck but people say they have had good luck doing it.

I planted some asparagus last summer and it's doing pretty good. My question is do you cut it down in the fall and if so when?

Don't cut your asparagus down until a few days after the first hard frost kills the tops. That gives the crowns time to store as much as possible that year. Nothing travels down to the crowns after the tops are dead.

Plus the red berries are seeds, let them drop, to start new plants for 4-5 years down the line.

Is there any advantage to cutting back asparagus in the fall after it dies? I always leave it and sometimes burn it in the spring.

We cut our dead stalks in January.

When I dug up wild along a back road and planted it, it was in the fall.

I mow mine after first frost. Turn some sand into the soil when planting. Asparagus likes good drainage.

It took the deer around my place to wipe out my entire patch in 4 years. I gave up and just buy it fresh in the stores now. It's a shame, as it's my favorite vegetable.

Venison steaks go great with aspagus.

I've heard salt on the beds of asparagus is good for it.
Not a lot, but some.
I never tried it, but know the wild along roads get salt spray during the winter thaws.
Guess that's where the idea came from.
