Ive got some drags id like to get set up for cats this year , but with the price of shipping ordering a couple hundred feet of no 3 chain is a hard sell for me as a hobby trapper.

Where have you guys found chain you recycled into drag chains? Thanks!

For cats, and only cats, I wouldnt be above using heavier gauge double link "swing set chain".

Canines WILL destroy it.

Flea markets. Can use logging chains if you can find em cheap enough. Just need to get a bit creative attaching them the trap

Old car tire chains are the best value. They are where you find them - garage sales, auctions, flea markets etc.. Need to remove the center chains and the side chains are the best but centers can be used too. Will need some S hooks and car chains are plenty strong enough for coyotes if not badly worn. My Experience. ..............the mike

Another vote for snow chains.

I find them at garage sales sometimes for $2-5 and most have very little wear.

Down here there may be 1 or 2 days a year they are needed, if that

I think most are from trips out of state, bought and used and never touched again.

I use the outsides for drag chains and the center pieces are just right to use a couple with swivels between for staked traps.
Most of my cable stakes have about 5 links of the center pieces attached as well

I collect tire chains, and use shorter pieces in my double stake setup.

For bobcats I've used plenty of old dog chain bigger end twin loop. Keep any eye out for wear but I like it because the twin loop will cut a highly visible little scuff as it gets drug around tree roots or across rock.

Coyotes are ususlly easy to see from the set location no matter how far they have traveled because they make a mess when they hang up. A cat can be about 15 ft away and if he lies still you might not see him until your next step is gonna be right on him. I like every clue I can get when I'm lookin for my cats.

I've never lost a cat on a drag but always worrued i might. I use a strip of the DOT reflective tape on every drag so that if I ever did fail to find one in the daylight I could come back after dark with a spot light and solve the mystery PDQ.

High desert- some chest high sage brush and some rocky outcrops with plenty of knee high and lower sage brush to go around

Im sure Lt Grey can add his own ideas in for ya but in brush the drag often hooks up to green plyable wood which acts like a shock spring and would work the chain even less because the catch wears itself out quick pulling against that springy wood. Im not a buy trail cams for every set I make but I am convinced coyotes will fight a trap til you stop him but a cat gives one big lunge then if he isn't free he just lays down and naps till you git there.

If my explanation of green wood being a nice springy hang uo for the drag wasn't clear I love snarring big hogs on range land after the cattle are out. I like a good long drag chain for this job so I can throw it uo over a limb. It's the best way I can think of to make sure a big body like a hog or lion will be right there and either expired or worn smooth out without bustin uo my gear.
