If you use wire screen, this stuff is pretty tough.

It's a little pricey, but you can make a lot of covers out of it.

Thanks Marathon, I saw Montana Wolf Trapper use muffin wrappers and they seem pretty slick but could get water logged.... gonna experiment with them.

I have used the muffin wrappers and even waterlogged they seem to do a good job of keeping stuff from getting under the pan. The only issue I have with them is we have a lot of pack rats and they seem to be attracted to whatever minute odor they give off. I often find the pan cover exposed, pack rat tracks and in some instances the pan cover pulled out by them. Maybe I should use clean ones instead of ones I took off the gas station muffins. grin Just kidding. I used clean ones. Coyotes don't seem to be put off by the muffin wrappers unless the pack rats have exposed it.

I switched to poly fill and they don't seem to bother it.

Hey Marty , I used all different kinds of stuff and the mice /rats like to chew on. I started using poly also, I go to the craft store and buy a yard of quilt batting 3/4” thick. Cut into squares about 2”x2”. Works great you get a ton of them for a couple bucks. No more problems with mice/rats.

wws,

when I trapped eastern Washington is used the 1" yellow sill insulation and cut 2x3 pads from it. It worked well because we rarely had a freeze and it was open and dry much of the winter. Where I am now I find those absorb enough moisture to be an issue with the freezes we have. How do the quilt batting squares hold up to rain and freeze conditions. The loose poly fill seems to do well with the rain and freeze. I got carried away when I was buying it. I probably have enough for the next five years.
