I just got back from a week long trip and had a blast. The first 4 shots out of the new A5 Sweet 16 accounted for 3 roosters. I shot my 3 another day with a 20 gauge which I had never done before. I have become addicted to this pheasant hunting and wish we had them here.

I have nothing clever to put here.

I am totally addicted to it. I wish our limit was three here, it’s only two.

50 years ago there were tons of wild pheasants around here. Now there are none.Getting a limit was taken for granted,,and best eating game bird in my opinion.I miss them days.

There wilder then a March hare here. I take a walk a few time during the season but they get up so far out you never get a shot. The cover is heavy not sure if that makes a difference. I can drive right by them going to my place and see a lot of them and they never get up and fly. Hard buggers to get for me.

Season opens tomorrow here. Gonna be tough hunting because there is still a lot of standing corn. Lots of birds, though.

Growing up in Kansas pheasant hunting was probably something I took for granted and now miss. 160 if you outlive me will you put me down in your will for that A-5 and a few boxes of No 6? 5 if its windy... 4 is ok if it's western kansas / panhandle region kinda windy is a fair option too. Oh and is the modified choke tupe part of the deal?

It seems to like 1 1/8 ounce 6's with the modified choke. I bought the 28 inch barrel and wish I had got the 26. It sure is light to carry.

Avid bird hunter here. It was more of a jab at released birds. Well done regardless

Nice picture Lugnut. Good luck on the rest of your season. Do you shoot any rabbits or let them run away ?

I’ll take a crack at any rabbit the dogs happen to flush. There just aren’t that many of them around anymore.

I see you’re from Ohio. I understand that Ohio has a very small, very fragmented wild pheasant population. I also know that they stock 14,000 birds annually.

So do you only hunt the wild birds? How do you tell them from the stocked birds? Or are you one of those rich guys that can afford to travel out of state to hunt wild populations at your leisure?

Here in Pennsylvania, we don’t have a wild population. 99% of the pheasants you see are stocked birds. If you want to be a pheasant hunter in Pennsylvania, you hunt stocked birds.

Do I wish we still had the wild populations like we did back in the 60s and 70s? Heck yeah!

But we don’t. I have no problem hunting stocked birds. And contrary to what seems to be a popular opinion, within a few days of release, these birds act every bit is wild as non-stocked birds. They run and flush wild, sometimes they sit so tight the dogs have to literally walk on them to flush them. They use all the escape tactics wild birds do. It’s every bit as fun as hunting wild pheasants. At least to me and my buddies.

Eh...wot?

If I remember right, Lugnut has said there aren't any (or many) wild birds in his part of the world, so the state releases them. That's better than no birds to hunt at all, I reckon.
I'm fortunate to live in an area with a very good population of wild birds. They sure are fun to chase.

Pheasants are gone here. Some blame turkeys. Quail are making somewhat of a come back.

We walked about 8 miles through some pretty nasty cover before each of the three of us got our two bird limit. As for hens, they are legal to shoot here. I prefer shooting (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) birds, everybody does, there’s more meat on them than hens. There is about a 0% chance of Pennsylvania developing a breeding population so killing hens doesn’t make a difference.

We worked pretty hard to flush the birds we flush. Nobody’s gonna pass on a pheasant flush just because it’s a hen.

Lugnut is right about stocked birds going wild. Our farm was right across the road from a huge public hunting area and that was stocked with birds 3 times during the season. We would get a fair amount of birds on our side of the road and they sure did turn wild. FAST !!!
