If you're not finding them on the ground, they almost never are ripe if you shake em off the tree. Last trip I checked on my wild patches, I tried to shake some out but the ones that fell were all rock hard that was almost two weeks ago and they still have barely softened up.

When they start to get squeezable they're ripe.

I know. They were slightly squeezable and yellow. Heck some.of em.were even rotten on the trees.

I wouldn't. Sell unripe pawpaws,lol

Takes a hard frost or good freeze to soften them up for eating.

You're wrong.
That's persimmons, not pawpaws.
Pawpaws will be ripe and gone by the end of the week and we've had no frost yet.

This has me hungry to try some. I located some from a Vermont nursery so will probably buy a few for next year.

We have a few persimmons dropping, soft and ripe, but no frost yet.
Saw a couple paw paws still hard and hanging on too, strange year.
Almost need a hard hat with all the black walnuts falling.

We worked a paw paw grove last Friday on the way home from the Kansas Rondi. Picked about 60. First for me. Loved it. How do you prepare the seeds for planting?

If I remember right , place in a moist paper towel in a zip lock bag in the refrigerator until spring.
Plant about an inch deep , water as needed but not drown the seeds.
It could take a couple weeks to a couple years for them to sprout.
Plant a lot of them , and you should get some early.

I ordered 3 pawpaw trees last month & I was thinking they'd come in the spring but yesterday I got an email saying they are being shipped right now. Luckily the ground isn't frozen yet. They are coming with some sort of shelter that I paid extra for. This is from Elmore Roots out of Vermont.

The fruit is pretty large, right? I am anxious to taste them.
