I wear Hippers as much as possible for the comfort and ease of movement. Usually you pull up on your pants to sit down, with Chesters, you have to pull down for room in the knees. If water depth is unknown, Hippers are a craps shoot. I always carry a razor sharp folding knife when in Chesters so I can get them off in an emergency. Get waders with the canvas outer, they are so much more resistant to cutting and tears. Wet rubber cuts like butter. I treat them with Armour All, Inside and Out when brand new, and several times during their life, really helps them last. Store them hanging in a cool dark enviornment

Chest waders if you are setting the den entrances before freeze up.(beaver trapping) I wear hip waders on the line in fall a fair bit mostly to keep the legs dry when walking in the wet bush or for bank or dam setting.

Look for waist high boots, called mudders in this area, by the fishing supplies The hip boots are an inch to short so it looks like you Ped your pants And that water is cold They look like cut down chest waders

No joke during Salmon season I stopped wearing boots and just started wearing swim trunks.
But for the matter of hip boots I've never seen the point, if you're going to bother getting something more than boots why not go all the way to chest waders. Whatever you want to reach will always be two inches deeper than whatever you're wearing though. That has happened to me more times than I can count. I'll stick with my chest waders. Salmon fishing in a speedo is kind of risky in bear country........lol

I've always worn hip boots for trapping. I have chest waders but wear them rarely, fishing mostly or duck hunting. I rarely ever find myself in a trapping situation where I feel the need for chest waders. I was doing a beaver demo many years ago when a young trapper asked me why I wore hip boots rather than chest waders. I told him because with hip boots I only get wet from the crotch down. With chest waders I get wet from the armpits down. Seems like which ever I wear I feel compelled to be working within a fraction on an inch from the top.
Trail cameras and fresh snow have broke a lot of trapper’s hearts.

Contact Hodgman waders co, they will or used to make waders for a custom fit. Get the kind with the canvas outer skin, they will hold up against beaver staubs or ? a lot better than the rubber. Make sure to allow plenty of room for extra laundry for warmth.
