The old cow pie set is deadly on these coyotes that have been pursued all winter by hunters and trappers!

To take this topic a bit further.

A tip from this old ADC trapper.

When I run into digger fox / coyotes in cattle or sheep country I know what to do right away. We all run into this situation from time to time for what ever the reason. I carry or find a couple thoroughly dried cow patties. I use this method East and West by the way.

I shred thru my sifter enough cow patty material to thoroughly cover my bedded trap and surrounding area out about 3 feet or so. Make that whole area look and smell the same.

I have just covered the trap bed proper area also with good results, but prefer to do a larger broadcast area to be most effective in my mind. Nothing short circuits a predators nose better then dried feces from another animal. Curiosity and their nature is working in your favor.

Coyotes can and do flip over dried cow pies all the time.
Certain times of the year beetles and other bugs are found beneath them, even worms, which coyotes eat.
Cow pies with bits of grain , or from nursing calves are even eaten by coyotes.
Flat areas with heavy winds can even move old dried ones.

Bobby J talks about using ground manure.
I have for years dried horse manure dried in the sun like peat moss and used it as a trap covering.
Fairly common among old time wolfers.

In SD, usually use a big one and cold weather so it will freeze to the ground. I don't use this much in warm weather as coons, skunks, are also working these patties. I like flat rocks in these areas too. Notice the tuff of grass in front as a jar guide. The original set was untouched for about 20 days. Caught one 10' away earlier on a bone set. When the ground gets frozen rock hard out here you are pretty much limited to flat sets! Good points about using manure as a trap covering.
