Never saw any use for ar's myself either. Own lots of guns but no need for me to own an ar. Completely useless for me as a hunter to own one.

It was mentioned in 1963 things changed.

Yes, about then Pres. Johnson started "the great society" which also began the great lowering of standards in America.
As in all historical cases, this newly embraced socialism simply accelerates the decay and rot of the affected civilization.

Slippery slope my arse. That's just an NRA talking point. Ingrain in their base that ANY gun law is a bad thing. That banning any type of gun is a bad thing.

It's common sense. When we see mass shootings and every one of them is with an AR and 15 or 30 round magazines, common sense would dictate that maybe we should do something about them. The shooting is not about the gun, but the massive body counts and carnage and wasted lives of innocent teenagers IS about the guns.

With 300+ million people in our country, there's going to be some severely mentally ill/unstable/violent people who will slip through the cracks and do mass shootings. But there would be a lot fewer dead children at the end of it if these people weren't able to get military-style AR's and 30 round clips whenever they wanted them.

You can't argue with that.

Guns don't kill ppl..ppl kill ppl. No black rifles ok.... pretty sure uni bomber had no firearms and killed a plenty. No 15rnd+ mags makes no difference. Most full size 9mm hold more than that

Liberal talking points, i saw them on the Senate floor today already. Same crap your spreading.

If it IS about the gun, why not outlaw ALL the guns?

And when YOU ALLOW them to take AR's and the nuts start using semi pistols, you will gladly allow them to be outlawed also?

How many ar 15's did Timothy Mcveigh use to kill 168?? Nuts will be nuts. We have laws against murder , doesnt stop a thing does it!
If its not Guns , It would be with Trucks, Cars, Explosions, planes. The list goes on..

I bought my ar15 in 1979 i do not hunt with it . I have it for self defense in case of war on my doorsteps! The second ammendment and the right to bear arms was not written so we could go hunting.. it was written in blood to protect against a tyranny government.

I dont mean to take light of the tragedy that occurred in florida at the hands of a nutjob. 17 dead kids is pale compared to the genocide that will occur sooner or later if we lose our right to bear arms!

Even if AR's are banned that doesn't mean squat there's a black market for a reason.

AR's can be used in hunting as there are plenty of calibers you can put on an AR platform. Take the .308 for example perfect hunting caliber and can use in an ar platform.

Yes teachers and school staff should be armed and constantly trained. There should also be armed security and parents who posses a ccw permit should be allowed to have their ccw on them. I hate the fact I have to disarm when I drop off or pick up my kids. I am sure the school would feel safer knowing their are parents that would lay down their lives for the children and staff at a school. When I am picking them up I have my head on a swivel and think what would I do right now if....and since I don't have my ccw on me? Either I can carry a ccw at their school and hope no one notices and I don't get a 4th degree felony or disarm and be a sitting duck. It is a catch 22.

In Israel teachers and staff are armed and are ready to lock and load.

We trust these people to educate our kids and hope that they protect them while being unarmed and most have little to zero hand to hand training/self defense or similar skills. Teachers and staff should be required to learn at least self defense skills. Before the naysayers say it, not everyone can afford private schools or afford to homeschool. I know I can't afford private school and no longer have the ability to homeschool if I wanted to, so public school it is.

It is not the gun it is person behind it. A gun is a tool. Some on here said to ban semi-auto rifles and large capacity mags, the rebuttal to that is shotguns in a crowd (like a school) can cause equal or more damage than an ar with less rounds spent. Most shotguns hold an avg of 5+1 and a good spread. If you want to ban a tool because of the actions of a few people who made wrong decisions why stop at guns, why not ban vehicles because people drive drunk and kill or injury innocent people, some lunatic drives into crowd killing and injuring numerous people? If we got rid of mags that hold 10+ people would just buy more mags. If we ban all mags then we have to reload one at a time which if practiced doesn't take long, then what go back to muzzleloaders? Where does it stop? There is no way to properly vet someone for mental health issues either.
Dylan Roof used a Glock Gen 4 .45, Fort Hood a S&W pistol was used, a shotgun was used in the attack in the Washington Naval Yard, the guy that shot in the crowd hitting Gabby Giffords also used a pistol, the Aurora movie theater attack had Ar's shotgun and a pistol, a pistol was also used the 1st Fort Hood shooting. See the point? It is not the gun it is the person behind the gun.

When it comes to these soft target attacks the gun is blamed but if a vehicle is used it is the driver who is blamed, why?

WOW. Are you on the same drugs the kid that did this today was likely on? I don't own an AR.... I think they are a but ugly gun. My husband doesn't either, so there is not one in this house. But I 110% believe that anyone that wants to own one should be able. Would having them outlawed have prevented today's massacre? Don't you think he could have done close to equal damage with a Ruger .22 with a large mag? Should we outlaw .22 rifles also?

I know I'll be labeled as some kind of traitor by you guns nuts, but I'd personally love to see some common sense and less NRA-driven paranoia. I personally hunt and carry a firearm more days than most on here, but I hate AR's. Seeing kids bloody in the streets every week is making me re-think my philosophy. Dead teenagers or semi-auto rifles. Hmm, seem like an easy choice. Nobody needs to be able to buy an AR, and nobody needs a 15 or 30 shell magazine. I'd be happy as heck if they were outlawed.

Gimme my shotgun, a .22 and a couple deer rifles. I won't ever own an AR.

Not sure about this case , but the common denominator in all these nut job shootings is prescribed psychotropic meds

Little Johnny has issues

He is taken to a Dr.

The doctor is trained to diagnose and places little Johnny in one of many categories. ( schizophrenia, bipolar, depression , anxiety, etc )

The doctor must label little Johnny or he cannot prescribe any medication

The doctor repeats this process with thousands of patients annually making an exceptional living

The truth is that all little Johnny needed was a swift kick in the a zzzzz now and then

Kids don't get their little arse whipped enough now days. My kids knew that if they did something wrong, there was going to be a lot of trouble in their lives. Both my boys got a pretty good lickin one time. Funny thing how you gain their respect after that. I only had to say something if they acted up. Both my fellas, one is 52 and the other is 50, have turned out to be model citizens. Both are a chip off of the old block. They both own their own business and do well at what they do. One other thing, they also had the same respect for Mom as they have for me.
Parents now days let kids be monsters. They don't raise a hand to make their little brats be responsible for their actions. That is the key word in this whole messed up world. Remember the word responsibility. Not a handful of kids have that drummed into their little minds.

Its pretty disturbing that some forum members think that the guns are the problem.........but you cannot fix stupid, its a more or less lifelong affliction.

On another note...
Today your 12 year old curses you out and you slap him your going to jail and no more firearm ownership for you. The women have taken control of what discipline is.....so, discipline is nothing. Many mothers divorce and run the father off and take over...the courts back them to the fullest. All the 'professional educators' are mostly female up till high school...female progressives that are enablers of misbehavior. Anti gun do gooders who actually do no good at all. Not to mention what goes on in the hood....there the young kids kill each other daily, by the hundreds and it never gets any media attention.

Basically a sad state of affairs all around us....and its not going to get any better.

Would it make you feel better if their guts were blown out by a 12 gauge? Everyone harping on what they are shot with? Why???? Dead is dead. Guarantee the body count today would have been ten fold had the little idiot used a 12 with a three round mag, that close he'd not missed once, and the devastation caused by a hit would have been almost certainly fatal.

Let's not stress the weapon used lets stress the fact these kids have the desire to commit such an act? It is not a mental issue either, it is a medicated out their minds issue, these kids are doped up all their young lives on psychotropic meds, young developing minds being altered by chemicals cause docs will prescribe meds for anything.

Parents don't raise kids these days they just medicate them so heavily that the kids don't bother them because they are too stoned to do much to be a bother.

Kids are taught they are an animal, with no hereafter, no absolute laws that they have to obey. "Why have morals if they impede your immediate happiness?" That's what I was told by a teacher about 14 years ago. Decided right then my kids (This was before I was graduated from high school. Have since married and have two kids.) would never go to any public, Christian, or private school, but only to home school. There are no child molesters, gangsters, drug dealers, phychiatrist who tell my kids to take mind drugs, and no school shootings. They do not have the belief in the theory of evolution shoved down there throat as the only belief acceptable. They are taught that they have a free will to choose right or wrong, and that they are accountable for every choice they make. They are rewarded when good, punished when bad, loved at all times. They are taught how to work, and that clean fun has no regrets or scars, unlike dirty fun. There is punishment for wrong doing, but also forgiveness and forgetting. They're emotions from God are developed, including guilt for wrongdoing. Read the book of Romans, and you will read of many of these things. Including forgiveness of sins. We tend to focus on the bad things. This kid that shot these other kids should have the physical consequences of this sin carried out, which is death. However, if he should turn to God for salvation before he is put to death, he will be forgiven the spiritual consequences of this sin, which are separation of his spirit and soul from God forever in the lake of fire. For the physical consequences of his transgressions, I pray he is tried as an adult, found guilty, and put to death, as God's law commands, but that he realizes Jesus died to pay for the eternal spiritual consequences of his sins, and believes on Christ for salvation before he departs this world.

What happened in 1963 was a HUGE expansion into more welfare. The slow distancing of people away from superstition is a good thing.

Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)
