am I the only person who constantly has a problem getting a scope far enough forward.

my son bought himself a scope for his AR and I was helping him install it last night , stock adjusted all the way out , cantilevered mount and I am still onto he hand-guard with it .

I have had to do this with others they seem to shoot just fine , but for my next one I am going to try a extended cantilevered scope mount unfortunately they seem rather expensive.

what are others using?

I seem to need to get the back edge fo the scope just about even with the back edge of the trigger in order to fit me

Maybe others don't shoot Nose to Charging handle ?

it isn't just ARs on other guns I have to use an extended rail

this is my son's rifle this was as far froward as I thought I could go keeping 2/3 of the mount on the receiver

looking for an even more extended mount you would think noses don't change that much in length maybe 1 1/4 to 1 3/4 from eye to tip of nose and eye relief isn't that unusual right around 3 to 3 3/4 inches

so if an AR was intended to be shot nose to charging handle why aren't all the scope mounts set up to put the back edge of the optic 2 1/4 to 2 3/4 inches forward of the charging handle ?

Looks pretty far forward. Are you left eye dominate shooting right handed or something?

Just passin through

no definitely right eye dominant

sort of tall at 6'2" long neck but none of that really matters on an AR-15 platform everyone's nose should be just touching the charging handle as intended that is how you line up your eye to the rear sight when shooting an AR with Irons.

the scope does have a fair amount of eye relief about 3.5 inches but most good optics should be in the 3 to 3.75 range

that thicker but pad gets me to 14" it is currently 13.5" LOP

part of it is we shoot everything 3 position standing , kneeling/seated , prone always nose to charging handle.

goose neck and drop for cheek weld on the non AR rifles

I can never get them far enough back.

Must be the different stances people use. I don't like " leaning into" a gun like alot of people.

i dont think nose to charging handle was ever intended for ARs with optics.

simply a way to teach repeatable position with the older M-16 models with the rear site mounted on the carry handle

If the rifle and the stocks fixed and adjustable were all designed around an iron sight , how is it that your nose wouldn't keep ending up at the charging handle

the A2 and the 6 position fully extended are 13.5 inches LOP I could really use 14.25 I add a 0.5 pad and get to 14 LOP and live with it.

it does have to do with shooting position I run 2 clicks out from all the way in when in a target stance standing and 1 in from the end in kneeling but prone all the way out.
having the one piece mount on the hand-guard some doesn't seem to hurt accuracy I have some nice 400 yard groups shot with one that I have set up similar with a different mount.

it has a lot to do with shooting prone and coming from the Appleseed school of shooting I can tell you it works , and it works to shoot all day and at ranges out to 500 yards or better

here is a article that helps explain http://luminousrabbit.com/2016/05/10/scope-positioning-mounting/

X3 I like to take a foam ear plug and tape it to the stock with the pointed end out. It works great for repeatable positions. I like a red-dot with iron sights for AR.

I can't imagine mounting a scope that far forward. That looks like it would be sooooooo uncomfortable to shoot. Can you post a picture of yourself, shouldering the gun, as if you were taking a shot. It seems as if your head would be so far forward that it would be uncomfortable too shoot.

this is my son shooting one in the top picture I don't have a lot of pictures of me shooting but the bottom one of me at the 100 yard line shooting a standing stage the next stage is a walk back to 200 for transition to kneeling/seated 55 seconds with load and reload then a walk back to your gear staged at 300 for a transition to prone rapid fire prone stage 65 seconds load and reload then back to 400 for a slow fire prone stage where you have 5 minutes starting loaded with 10 rounds and starting in position

[Linked Image]
he is only about 5'6" in this picture I think he was 13 he is 6' 1" now at 16
with the 2 piece mount in this pic I would have liked to get forward about another half inch but would have been on the hand-guard this is a 300black out and he is at 200 yards

[Linked Image]
you can see my hat brim just touches the scope in standing in prone I am a bit more forward set the hat over the scope so I don't get sun in my eyes

Sounds to me like you are died in the wool, old school, nose to the charge handle kind of guy who is trying to apply the same approach to shooting a gun with a scope.
Nothing wrong with that.
If I were trying to do this, I would try a Leupold scope. I am not going to talk bad about Vortex scopes, but I can tell you that a Leupold scope is very forgiving in regards to where your eye is positioned behind the scope while still having full view of the target.

I have this setup on my AR
[Linked Image]
Colt factory scope , got it when I bought it used. Works good , sits in the right spot for good distance from your eye.

Try raising that right elbow of yours up to shoulder level while your shooting, you should see a noticeable difference in your sight picture, especially when using a scope!
