Well i have been back from Tularosa New Mexico for a few days. Had the pleasure of taking 3 days of trapping lessons from Mr James Lucero. All i can say is WOW! I was taught some true old time wolfer ways. That is exactly what I went to him for ! We went and made sets about 3 or 4 miles from his house, on BLM land. Also went on some private land. I got to see alot of his old stomping grounds! Also learned 6-7 trap set that are NOT in any of his books! I really like the bobcat sets he showed me, they are NOT in any books of EVER be shown anywhere. Mr Lucero is also plaining to write another book. Its will be gear toward = Cattle, Sheep, and hard to catch and spooky coyotes. Mr Lucero is also going to start giving afew lessons again! He will be charging 1000 dollars for 3 days . I can tell you that it is WELL worth the money! His phone number is = 1 575 585 6314 Please keep in mind Mr Lucero is 85 years old. So speak clearly on the phone. If anyone has any questions on = Where to stay? What to bring? or anything else feel free to PM me anytime.

That would be fun.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

I would really like to meet him. Definitely would like to try his lures. His book doubled my catch at least.
If I could get free of my job I would do the personal instruction in a minute.

I'm itchin' to see a coyote twitchin'.

More trappin' and less yappin'.

Wow, thanks for sharing. Taking instructions from him would be a hoot.
I learned a lot from his books. Used his lures back in the day with good success. Never realized until recently he was still selling some.
Again, thanks for sharing.

You (we) are the only ones that prevent those trips. And asking loved ones for "gifts cards" for birthday or Christmas or anniversary gifts, towards his tuition could help as well. I was surprised several yrs ago at how many "on the line' instructors offer a gift card/layaway system.
Putting in for Vac at work is also imperative. I finally had to tell my boss...."look, these offers only come certain times of the year, and i'm not getting any younger......"
When i was self employed i just had to schedule the work around my trips, to conventions or wherever.

As per request. Here is alittle more info. You can stay in Tularosa or Alamogordo NM . Alamogordo is about 13 miles from Mr Lucero's house. There is a Motel 6 that gives a discount on 3 days or more stay. Its 40 dollars a night. Good bed . Microwave and Mini Fridge There are more expensive motels near by. Food? With this Covid -19 drive threws onl open. But Walmart in Alamogordo is open . Must wear mask. IF you want to trap after you take lessons from James Lucero, their is Millions of acres of BLM land.

You Betcha Matt!

Lucero’s JL#1, Coyotero, & Winter Wolf were my top three producers from a lineup of over 20 proven lures last season.

Here is the contact information and books he has available.

I really enjoyed his book "Master Wolfer" and it made me rethink the actual placement of lure at a set. His idea of placing a small amount of "catch dirt" over the bait in a hole is very smart and is proven to catch wise canines.

I may have to look into his personal instruction myself.

Tejas,
I spoke with Mr Lucero last evening and sent him a check for the the 3 lures mentioned and the MW book. He was very pleasant to talk to, and very happy to chat, and obviously a wealth of information. I asked him in what type of sets he used each of the 3 lures, and I’m not sure he understood my question, as he kept answering “bobcat, coyote and fox” lol. Care to elaborate?

ST - Thanks for sharing. I met Mr. Lucero years ago- I forget which convention. He was great to talk to and took time to answer tons of questions. He gave a demo on coyotes. Thanks again.

I sent my order for all three lures today. I got his master wolfer book last year. I asked in my letter with enclosed check if he would sign it. He sent me a signed copy. About a week ago I got a hand addressed envelope with a flyer for his books and one for his lures. I sent the order, I like doing business like this. No calls, e-mails, or catalogs just send a letter with what you want and the money. Your goods will arrive promptly. He has great products and he is as honest as they come. It is a pleasure to do business with a man like him.

Talked to a guy in Montana the other day. About alltuitude sickness. Thought it might be woth mentioning IF you come to Tularosa New Mexico. You might want to come a few days early to trap or take lessons. Alamogordo is 4400 ft and Carrizozo is 5500 ft and up the road CloudCroft is 8600 ft . So give this some thought if you are coming from sea level or 600 ft like I did. Took me a few days to get used to it

Sounds like a great place. One of my favorite places to camp is at 8,000 ft. I went for two days to Colorado in July and went to just at 12,000 feet. I got a little loopy and sure was out of breathe. Ha! My house is right at 580 feet so I can relate.

Got any pictures?

We turkey hunting the LNF near Mayhill and it took a day or two to get acclimated. That doesn’t mean I still didn’t run out of breath though, lol. Coming from sea level sucks!!

Wow! That open terrain looks more than a bit daunting to an Eastern trapper! Where are all the brushy drainage ditches, fence rows, crop changes, and farm lanes??? Lol!

That’s a really cool picture, Chris. Is that the remnants of a JL dirt hole in the picture, or did he do that for you?

The price of his lures are $15 for 2 oz and $25 for 4 oz . If you call to place an order you may need to give him a minute, I don’t think he could hear me until he switched phones .

Nice Work ST!

That's some good looking sand in those catch photos.

What things have you run up against that you weren’t expecting on the line out West Texas Way?

Tejas. Biggest think is the way the land can change on you in West Texas. I am about 1 hr from New Mexico. Lots of the land I am trapping on LOOKS like New Mexico

The ground goes from hard pan to dune type sand. In less than a mile. So I am carrying Saber Tooth drag and chain stakes

Tejas. Another thing that comes to mind Is the vast size of the Very open landscape I can trap on land that is as far as I can see in all 4 directions. Next year I may spend From = October to Feb. in West Texas working on catching coyotes for several different ranchers

Awesome job ! I realize your probably not trapping for the fur but what percentage of coyotes would you say are worth skinning ? Have you tried many dirt holes in that country ? I know James says dirt holes don’t work in his country .

Golf ball. Dirt Holes don't work here either. To dry. The sand just fills in out of 70 Set I have 3 dirt holes. Those were under the = root ball of a piece of brush. Well. I am going to say about 40% mangy coyotes and another 10 % that low grade or thin So 77 coyotes maybe 30 good ones? So 30 x 15 dollars. That wouldn't hardly pay the 315 for a non resident fur bearing license. SO I do nuisance work and they go in the ditch

Good to hear. Trying Formula 1 this year for the first time. In fact, I think I talked to you about it. Glad to see you having success!

Managed to get some traps in the dirt on my place today

Used some Lucero lure on 3 of them, JL#1, Coyotero and Winter Wolf

Has been a few weeks since I had traps out so curious to see how quick I can catch some coyotes

Been really busy. Things are winding down. Day 18 and I have caught 90 coyotes. Was hoping for 100 in 20 days. But I have to pick up line tomorrow and go home. Have lots to get done. Will return around Jan 5th or so for a 30 day job on a few properties that want coyotes gone

You may have posted this info and I just missed it but

1) How many traps were you running?
2) How much ground did you cover?
3) Did you ever recover all of your traps on drags?

Have a safe trip home

BTW I think 5 a day average is good

LT GREY. Glad you enjoyed it. Just got off phone with MR James Lucero about 10 mins ago. We were talking about a new set that will be going in his next book. I really hope he finishes his new book soon. I can't wait to read it!

Has anyone used Lucero's lures in the cold and wet of the north? I've noticed that some lures work better in some climates than others, but have never tried Lucero's lures.

Bearcat2. I have as most people know used Lucero's lures exclusively for past 4 years. Have averaged 300 plus coyotes a year And 406 coyotes last year. I can't tell you they will work in extreme cold. Because about 15 degrees is the coldest I have caught coyotes in. I'm a warm weather guy. BUT in rain these lures work!!!! Was on a coyote contract job for 14 days. It rain or was wet 12 of those days And still caught plenty of coyotes with James Lucero's lure

Cannot say that I used them lately. Back when Mr. Lucero came out with the books and lures, I used his lures and baits quite a bit. I really liked them a lot for a few years.
Had good luck on coyotes with them. When he stopped advertising for some reason I guessed he was retired.
I liked the articles that had been written about him. Sounded like a down to earth guy. Loved his coyote book.

Maine has about as crappy of weather to trap in as one can imagine. It is really a crap show most of the season. Most years, too much rain, too hot too late or too cold to early, freezing rain, sleet, snow etc., thaw/freeze, thaw/ freeze, then just rock hard freeze. It is awesome.

I have a picture of a rather large Bobcat caught with his bait and lures. I am no great photographer but the picture came out good. It was late season, about 6 to 8 inches of snow on the ground, and snowing when I snapped the picture. The picture came out pretty cool.

The set had been made for coyotes and was a very well blended baited flat set. Nothing visual. The set proper was about 20 yards from the wood line which is where the cats typically pass.

Mac

BT. I feel the same way. Put like everything else James Lucero does. He wants everything to be perfect. Tejas did a great job with the labels on the new lure bottles. So I am sure he will be helping Mr Lucero with the pictures in the book and so on ! Having the book be perfect in every way is Mr Lucero's main goal

Great thread, I took the advice and called for the book. Mr. Lucero was great and seemed very pleased to visit, especially after I told him I had twin 11 year old boys that were learning to trap. He was quick with a couple tips and some advice and is no doubt a wealth of knowledge. I'm looking forward to getting the book and flyer to order some lure. Thanks again for the great thread.

Does Mr Lucero take credit cards over the phone? I want to try his lure here in PA. Is there a price sheet available?

He has new flyers now. Dont think he has 1 0z bottles anymore. Just 2 oz and 4 oz. I dont know price of 2 oz but 4oz is 25 dollars a bottle. If you call him , he will send you a flyer. He sent out about 100 or so to guys that order from him regularly. So just call him. You will enjoy talking to him!

I got his books for my birthday last week and he included a flyer. On it he has lure cost at 15$ for 2 oz, and 25$ for 4 oz. Shipping is 10$ for under 50$, 50$-100$ is 15$ shipping and over 100$ order shipping is 23$. He has JL#1, Coyotero, and Winter Wolf listed on this flyer. If i was tech savvy enough to post pictures on this sight I would send a photo of the flyer, but I haven't figured out how to do that yet.

If someone could post a picture of the flyer, or send me a pm and I’ll give you my number to text it too, that would be awesome.

Blak Spot I know the feeling. Bibilo = Book company, has notified me by email , that after 3 days of THEM contacting post office , that my book is lost, without a trace . USPS can even find it. Been waiting since April 6 th or so. USPS is doing a sorry job with our mail. Its just terrible

Finally got my lures. Did not get a new flyer with the order, but i did not request one. Took for granted he'd send one. So you may have to ask when you order

Got my order from Mr. Lucero today. Got both books autographed, but he didn’t put a flyer in.

Dropped by Mr. Lucero's place a couple days ago and met him for the first time. Had a pretty interesting discussion on coyotes and some of the things he has done. Pretty impressive. He said he may be going to the NM Trappers Association rendezvous July 30-31 in Alto. Picked up his snare book (already have Master Wolfer) and a couple bottles of lure. Here are his fliers for those who are interested. He did say he is working on another book and may start selling a new lure he has been working on for a while. I always enjoy talking to these men who have been down the river and back.

NightTrain is a VERY good lure. I have caught about 35 coyotes so far with the Night Train lure Mr Lucero sent me to try out and report back to him on. A few other guys on here are trying it out, and MAYBE will report back on it latter

I know Mr. Lucero is getting up there in age. Does anyone know if he has anyone picked to continue his line of products when he is unable to?

Are those the only lures? Thought he sold urine also.

As far as I know he does not sell urine. He used to sell quite a few more lures but these are all he has right now.

Caught almost 40 coyotes now with James Lucero’s = NightTrain lure. As you can see. It works well even in heavy rain. 2 inch and a catch. 1 inch more and a catch today!!!

Not really sure. Smells like it has gland in it. I dont ask him alot of questions about his lure. He has been good enough to me. To give me some of his old lure from 30 years ago. That I have no idea what it is? Just call it Lucero’s screct paste bait. I have some stuff that he no longer makes

I have no desire to know the ingredients or reveal secrets wink

I guess I should have asked how you use it, food/curiosity/territorial. That is more of the information I was looking for. Looks like mostly flat sets so food would go to the bottom of the list based on what little I know about flat sets

I will add some to my next order if he is offering it

Curiosity and territorial would be what I am going for with my Flat Sets. Just like in James Lucero’s book. I am using lure stick at Flat Sets
