JC Connor makes his version but you have to weld one side of the loop.

Here`s how I make them. First make a jig to bend your 40 penny nails.Put jig in vice and put a small pipe over your nail and bend it.

Then use a cutting wheel on a grinder and cut nail off straight. Then put in vice grips and weld. Then put on trap and weld again. [Linked Image]
All you need are 40 penny nails,5/16 nuts and j hooks.

If you buy them they will come looking like this.

Can just use a bolt cutter to cut the heads off. Unless your ocd kicks in and you need the flat cut.

I like to make my shank longer on my j-hooks. Seems to help keep grass from fouling up the swivel.

I have made my j hooks from 40 penny nails but never really thought it made a difference.Just started buying the heavy j hooks and using them.

If you can get a hold of a bender made by Jason Dufrense they make a good swivel. I’ve made many many on mine.

Another option is a conners swivel with a 30d nail jhook. Not my idea but it seems to work very well.

What would be a good starter welder for small stuff like this? Keep in mind I don't know anything at all about welding or welders.

Love this! I use 20d nails, but there is so much waste, will definitely have to try this, if you don't mind!

Hobart is a good low cost welder (I don't know if it's considered economy or not), it's what I have. I don't have a super cheap model (I do quite a few frivolous projects with it), but there are some value models out there. I'd say if you can spend a few hundred bucks on something, then you're definitely gonna be glad you did!

Hobart handler 140 is what I have. Done hundreds of trap mods and a couple thousand swivels and chain rigs. Plus many other welding projects. It’s held up well.

I like the Sterling swivels.
MB Crunch proofs, I use a lot of those anymore.
The new swivel with a spring inside it sold by the company who make the 'No Dead Zone' traps. . .haven't used them, but they have my attention.
Anyone on here used them ?

What is the benefit of the sterling swivel vs a crunch proof that has 2 swivel points vs the single swivel?
