Caught 2 rats out of the traps I was able to reach today, and had many other traps that were clogged with leaves, grass, twigs and other flotsam.
We planned on setting some numbers of beaver traps that were easily set by canoe but the high wind coming off Lake Ontario put a stop to that plan.
Water is still up close to 3 feet over my conibears and remains the color of chocolate milk.
This complicates trapping bank dens until the water recedes.
If the wind hadn't been blowing 20 knots we would have thrown in some floats in to take advantage of the now high water.
I have a lot of excuses why we're not stacking the rats up but that's life until the water levels stabilize.
stay tuned.

Is it legal to set “rat dens” but at least 5 ft from rat houses? Not wanting to open a can of worms but clarifying. The five foot rule applies to structures constructed by the rat in which It could take shelter. Bank dens don't fall under that rule as their is no way to measure the actual den structure in which the muskrat would take shelter. The underwater entrance hole and/or tunnel is not the structure that the rat would take shelter in so there is no feasible way to quantify the 5 foot rule. This has been a settled ECON law enforcement interpretation of the rule since at least the mid-1970's and not even subject to debate as long as I have been trapping (1972) walleyed

You would have a hard time convincing me a push-up isn’t a structure. Bank tunnel I get. O yea btw it’s a stupid law.
Stupid laws can force trappers to dig deeper and get better > in defense of stupid laws<

Stupid laws can force trappers to dig deeper and get better > in defense of stupid laws< Where does the word structure come in?Theres a big difference between a push up or feed pile,,,and an actual muskrat "HOUSE" Muskrat HOUSE is the word used in our NYS regs.

Did you catch any more muskrats walleyes? Yes Boco, I caught 5 rats today from two spots. Not feeling well today. I had planned on setting a new spot but my ticker started acting up with my atrial fibrillation. Started having chest pains so I went home a took a long nap. Pulled one spot completely and left the other. It would have been a good day to set traps but I just ran out of gas by 10:00AM and went home. I feel a bit better this evening. Just skinned, fleshed, and stretched the five rats and now I'm catching up on what BOCO is up to. w

Woke up to cold, snow, and wind this morning at dawn.
Checked my Sandy Island Beach sets in the channel to South Sandy Pond and out of eight sets we had a Large beaver and three rats. Had another fired but empty 330. Tried to reset the 330's but the wind wouldn't let me hold the canoe stable while I reset the spot so I'll try and reset tomorrow if the wind lever lets up.
My buddy New Wave Dave took 18 of my #1.5 Victor Stoploss and set some feed beds in Black Pond Tuesday and on today's check pulled out 8 nice rats for me to skin.
Hoping for some nicer weather in the morning so I can get Stony Creek set up.
Stay Tuned.

How much you guys getting for your rat glands this year? $100.00 a quar t. It has been that price since the Mayflower landed at Plymouth Rock. Before you ask, mine are already spoken for. w
