We recently did a boreal owl photo array. Here's a few more owls I've had the good fortune to run across over the years. Y'all pitch in when you can, huh?

Snowy Owl. This was an injured owl that lived with me for a couple of weeks, fed up on mice every day, and released.
[Linked Image]

Northern hawk-owl. Miss Lisa and I spent many a early spring weekend trapping and banding hawk owls. This is one ready to release.
[Linked Image]

Great gray owl. This is a YOY bird that "adopted" me on a moose hunt one year. Followed me around for about 5 hours, begging food about every 5 minutes. His presence didn't seem to help my moose hunting.
[Linked Image]

Near-fledgling barn owl. I was banding raptors, climbing into cliff nests in southern Idaho many years ago. Fun project.

Really cool photos! I love owls....I can pull off a pretty good imitation of Great Horned hoots so many an early evening we have little concerts outside my cabin.

My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

As close as I could get to this barred owl. He sat in that tree all afternoon and made every call that he was capable of. They sure have a range of calls

Great gray owl.

Ours seem to be a bit paler on average. This one from the Salair Ridge, a pair there made a nest in a well-lit birch copse, which is not very typical for them, normally, they're taiga dwellers.

Came to camp last weekend to discover that a grosbeak had flown into my sliding glass door. Such a beautiful bird

First pic is young barn owl in my deer stand. Notice dead black rat snake in foreground. There were several dead rat snakes in the stand that were not eaten. I believe the mother probably killed them in the stand when they came looking for something to eat.

Bottom pic barred owl.

I've had family's of Barred Owl's living out back for many years now. It's a real "Hoot" when they start up with a "fuss fest", especially a night.

Lovely pics . Really like the Great Greys. And I love hearing any owls, but especially the big ones.

Here's my tough guy...a Pygmy. He was chasing a Junco and bumped the window. He was fine, just a bit dazed and wondering where his Junco was. I didn't hold him too hard, no worries ...he was strong once he got his bearings and wanted to fly.

He has been around here for several years now. Love seeing them.

I usually see owls around dusk. Too dark for a decent photo. I definitely appreciate your pictures, Jack.

To all that contributed -

Fantastic array of great photos; THANKS. Like Tray, I've got hundreds of owl images (some of mine, going back more than 50 years). Here's one I want you all to identify (clue: Tatiana has an advantage).

What's the difference between a "hawk" and a "boreal"? Do they occupy the same habitat?

Yes, they occupy the same habitat, although the northern hawk owl is usually in much more open country. The boreal functions as a typical owl and is found in more heavy timber. On the other hand, the northern hawk owl basically functions ecologically as a hawk or a falcon. The northern hawk owl is largely diurnal rather than nocturnal, flies generally straight and very fast, whereas the boreal has relatively short and rounded wings, flies fairly slow.

Put up a mist net for woodcock and catch one June beetle and low and behold along comes the Boreal Owls out of the woods
Very interesting thread and always a passion since I have put up a few owl boxes over the years.
No need for insulation once a Screech Owl takes up home in a box. Clean out time is a fly tiers delight...whether legal or not is the question in their use.

One of the interesting nest that I found was in a witches broom on the top of a black spruce. It was featured in the book Great Grey Owls by Bob Nero, the man behind in getting the bird as listed as our Provincial bird
