We recently did a boreal owl photo array. Here's a few more owls I've had the good fortune to run across over the years. Y'all pitch in when you can, huh? Snowy Owl. This was an injured owl that lived with me for a couple of weeks, fed up on mice every day, and released. Northern hawk-owl. Miss Lisa and I spent many a early spring weekend trapping and banding hawk owls. This is one ready to release. Great gray owl. This is a YOY bird that "adopted" me on a moose hunt one year. Followed me around for about 5 hours, begging food about every 5 minutes. His presence didn't seem to help my moose hunting. Near-fledgling barn owl. I was banding raptors, climbing into cliff nests in southern Idaho many years ago. Fun project.

Really cool photos! I love owls....I can pull off a pretty good imitation of Great Horned hoots so many an early evening we have little concerts outside my cabin.
My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

I've had family's of Barred Owl's living out back for many years now. It's a real "Hoot" when they start up with a "fuss fest", especially a night.

I usually see owls around dusk. Too dark for a decent photo. I definitely appreciate your pictures, Jack.

To all that contributed - Fantastic array of great photos; THANKS. Like Tray, I've got hundreds of owl images (some of mine, going back more than 50 years). Here's one I want you all to identify (clue: Tatiana has an advantage).

What's the difference between a "hawk" and a "boreal"? Do they occupy the same habitat? Yes, they occupy the same habitat, although the northern hawk owl is usually in much more open country. The boreal functions as a typical owl and is found in more heavy timber. On the other hand, the northern hawk owl basically functions ecologically as a hawk or a falcon. The northern hawk owl is largely diurnal rather than nocturnal, flies generally straight and very fast, whereas the boreal has relatively short and rounded wings, flies fairly slow.
