Miscellaneous deer pictures. Both the muleys and the white-tails seem to like the compost bin in late winter. This is a micro-carving I found on a deer antler. I'm still looking for information on who the artist might have been. This was a big torn-open throat patch I saw on a muley. I imagine it got hooked on barbed wire. Don't know if it survived or not. The flap of skin was hanging down in front. Deer seemed oblivious to the injury at the time.

Compost deer sure looks in rough shape when you can see it's neck muscles, rib cages showing. All our deer that got through the winter have no hair mid-way down to their bellies and nothing on their rumps showing. That extra hair is needed now because the summer red pelage the deer flies can bite through.( because of excessive snow) Thanks for sharing

Jack, Mine are just showing their yellow ocher summer clothes . I have muleys here too. When I see them in transition phase, with chunks of old hair hanging on , I always get the urge to take a curry brush to them. Must be the horseman in me Same with the bighorns I see here. That carving was a unique find. And I'm glad you were the one who happened across it. Rivers and creeks are at full capacity now. The strength of a river....I am transfixed watching them. Lots of snowpack still in the high peaks. Cool and rain, but clearing a bit for a few days till the next round. I love it. Just like the wet summers in the cycle years ago.
