When you live where the ducks live and are caught and banded, the ducks you shoot are banded close to where you live. I shot a Mallard drake that was at least 1 year old when banded and I shot it eight years later about 20 miles from where it was banded. Most all the ducks and geese I have shot were banded within 35 miles of where they were banded.

Not a duck, but a goose my buddy killed on the last day of our season here last year. It was banded in Hoards, Ontario, Canada in 2016 and killed February 2022 in East Central NC. Nearly a 900 mile migration The other band was from somewhere in Maryland in 2020. Its the only double band I have been part of ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2022/09/full-30562-150521-img_6975.jpg)

Here in eastern central Ohio, I shot a triple crown lesser Canada goose. On one leg was a U.S. Fish & Wildlife band, on the other leg was a Jack Miner Bird Sanctuary band, and on the neck was a plastic collar. The US band was from upstate NY. The Miner band was from Ontario. The collar was from the James Bay race of geese up near where Boco lives.
In a cornfield over decoys I shot a banded Mallard from upstate NY.

I have shot many banded geese from about 65 miles away. One goose band was nearly worn through from the inside most likely because of sand getting in between the leg and the band. The leg was fine.

I shot a couple drake Mallards here in Michigan that were banded out-of-state. One from S.D., the other from the Agassiz Nat'l Refuge in Mn. A hen Woodie banded locally, 8 Canada Geese banded in southern Mi. but released locally after being banded. Another C. Goose I shot by my house that was banded about 110 miles S. and W. of here by a group of DNR folks, one of which was the son of my best friend!

I have killed a few banded birds, a green-wing teal, a pintail, a couple of snow geese and the coolest was a drake Canvasback. The band was so worn on the Canvasback that it took them a few days to get back to me as they had to do some digging to find the records with only partial numbers on the band still readable. These were all killed in south-central Nebraska, one came from North Dakota, the rest were banded in Canada but I dont recall the specific locations.
Crazily I have hunted waterfowl since 1984 and never killed a banded bird until the early 2000s and I harvested a lot more birds when I was starting out than I have since the 1st banded one appeared.
Those snow goose band probably came from east of Churchill at La Perouse Bayhttps://www.researchgate.net/figure...ng-the-five-regions-where_fig1_255620701 most of the work on habitat damage of snow geese has come from that area and lots of banding of birds. | | |
