...........from long ago. The date was November 5, 1972. A high school companion and I were hunting and witnessed a fine rooster pheasant fly across a plowed field and land in the headlands of the field next to a railroad track. The companion commented he'd never shot a pheasant before, so we walked over the 200 or so yards to where the bird had disappeared into some brush. When we got there I grabbed up a fist sized stone and told the kid to get ready........and lobbed the stone into the brush in hopes of flushing the bird. We heard a flopping when the rock hit the ground, so knew the bird was still in there. I said to be alert and looped around and walked through the bushes to, hopefully, put the bird up for him to shoot. I walked up on the bird laying dead, with that rock laying next to it! Somehow I had whacked that unlucky rooster in the noggin when I tossed the stone to flush it. The photo is of that same rooster. I mounted it for myself after accidently bopping it in the head 50 years ago today. Yep, I now feel like an old man!

If I had told that story.. There are people would have said I was full chit.. Being someone who had bopped more than one critter with a rock when was kid. I can see that tail in my minds eye. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks MD, the thing sounds even more improbable when I say I had no idea where in the brush that bird was. He was, as the thread title says, just an unlucky rooster!

I believe it , I hit plenty of things I had no intention of that were just dumb or bad luck cost me a window or 3 also stuff bounced in a way you could never do on purpose and bam.
I had friend bet me I couldn't hit the problematic rooster that chased his sisters with a rock when we were kids , I did on my first try , we thought we were going to have to explain it to his mom then the rooster got up ran in circles 3-4 times and ran off.
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

It was intentional but still sounds like BS. I chucked a rock at a big old carp doing the skim the top thing. Was right up close to the bank. Danged if I didn't ring it's bell was able reach in pick up. I don't recall how old I was? Wasn't in the mood to drag it home. So put back and it swam away. Tell that story by the campfire after few beers. BS flags start flying..LOL

I killed a porcupine with a one gallon hootch bottle in Hatchers Pass, Alaska, once, can't shoot a gun within 1/4 mile of the road there.

Best I ever did was the neighbors Golden Retriever in my garbage can. Probably has been 45 yrs or so. I pulled in the driveway and it had it's head in my garbage can. I was furious as I had been picking up garbage from it for a couple of weeks . The owner, my best friend at the time refused to do anything about the dog running loose. The dog was startled and run thru an open gate into my fenced back yard. I jumped out and grabbed the biggest rock I could find. I threw it with maximum force thinking to hit the dog in the ribs as it ran sideways across the back fence. I gave it a good lead and hurled it. Wango Bango , I knocked it plum out on the run ! I truly was sad for the dogs injuries. I carried it in my arms to its home, across the road and mumbled an apology.
Never seen that dog again off its chain.
Never got invited over for beers and cards after that either.
