My experience says (in my part of the country) that there are more coon traps, of all types) stolen or destroyed by a few coon hunters using dogs. The dogs find a coon in one trap and the hunters start looking for others. If they can't remove the traps, they will destroy them. I am stating HARD CORE FACTS here. When I was a state and Federal Game Warden, I averaged probably 6 to 10 arrests per year on such cases. In some cases, they destroy the trap and others would take them and throw them in a lake or other body of water.
There were of course always a lot of theft on most all of the wildlife areas I worked. Muskrat and coon traps were the most thefts. The reason the dog hunters excuse was that their dogs would get caught and injured. Of course, we know that is impossible with DP traps.
As was stated above; I am sure most any farmer has coon problems and if you show them the DP traps and how they work, I am sure you will find plenty of places to trap and possums.
BTW... I am not taking sides or falsely accusing all dog hunters, I used to run a couple hound myself.

That sucks.
Earth anchors and welded J hooks can help keep the bird watchers honest. If they are an anti they will probably go to town on your trap with a rock tho. This right here. If someone wants th steal them the are going to really work at it. That's sucks, maybe try and get them out of the line of traffic.

Too bad, make sure your traps aren't out in the open and paint them camo. Also as stated, earth anchors

Fellow "sportsmen" will screw you over quicker than any anti will. Just a statement of fact. They'll steal traps, trail cameras, trees stands, climbing sticks, gear out of your truck etc. It just is what it is.
Sometimes nothing can be a real cool hand

It's almost always the antis who steal traps, especially just some raccoon traps.
I beg to differ. It’s almost always HUNTERS. Here is more likely to be other "trappers" than either, but I have had hunters get some of them too. The majority are taken by other trappers looking for locations and finding your traps instead.

hmmm thanks for the tips. with cablesu suggest just looping around a tree or something? Yep. Small tree, exposed tree root. or big wood drag If you tie off to a tree be sure it will tighten on the tree. Don't make a loop around the tree and back to your trap. If you do a coon can get up the tree , then they may end up hanging from the trap. Even if they just go up the tree thay will be hard to get down.
