No I haven't been bit, but I have caught a few setting 330s while still in my hand.

I got a nasty cut on my finger from a dead beaver. He had clamped on one of the jaws of a 330, and died like that. I was trying to pry the jaws apart when my hand slipped. In my surprise and anger, I whacked the critter in the mouth with a rock and broke the teeth off. Been doing that every time since.

I had an adult latch onto my wader boot tip while I was standing in waist deep water. Lucky for me the boots were large, and it missed my toes. Had I been wearing tight fitting boots, there’s a good chance a couple toes would have been lopped off. That was the Saturday before Easter 2017.

I was running a vertical submersion rod. It was the first time I’d ever used one, and my snare had just enough length to allow the beaver to get its nose up, meaning it could swim in circles for a long, long time.

When I approached the set, I noticed the water boiling. Surprised, I assumed it had just recently been snared. I went on checking my traps and returned to retrieve it. That’s when I noticed the water still boiling and realized I had a big, big problem. I had a beaver on a vertical rod that could swim in circles and also had several feet of vertical space to maneuver. If you haven’t dealt with this, trust me, it can be a pain.

Knowing that my best chance to get it to surface would be to get it swimming as much as possible, I began agitating the water—-it worked. A few moments later, I noticed my foot was very, very heavy. It took about a second for me to realize what happened, and I knew I’d messed up. I began walking backwards and holding pressure, and luckily it let go. I climbed up on the bank and decided I would just have to agitate it with a longer stick, or I’d be out there all day. I only had a pocket pistol, and when I tell you shot opportunities were minimal, I mean it. This nonsense carried for for 20 minutes or more, finally victorious. That was it for vertical submersion Rods, although I now know how to do it correctly.

From that point forward, I started using rebar with a crosspiece, and the problem was solved. I never once had anything like that happen, and it became what is probably my all time favorite tool for nuisance beavers—- rebar snare poles with a 12” crosspiece. It’s very, very effective.

I was doing ADC work and was using snares because of the area I was in I didn’t want to use 330’s. The water wasn’t deep so I attached the snare to a 6’ cable with nothing to tangle in. I’ve found with a long cable they don’t fight as hard.
I had a long day so I started before daylight with this job. I could see the catch circle, but no snare or beaver. Then I heard a loud hiss like a cat right by my left ear. Turned the light that way and there was a 40 lb beaver at eye level on the bank less than 20 inches from my head.
If he had a notion to bite me it would’ve been bad.
Never heard a beaver hiss except that one

Many, many years ago when I was 23 grabbed ahold a beaver who was lively as can be.
That beaver was not in a trap or anything at all.
Once I had him by the tail I was really in a spot.
The dispatch was quite easy though, up against that rock.
I even had a witness for this soggy show.
Every time he has a beer he always tells the tale, about that day on Medford Creek.

True story actually.

I have another one too. I will tell that one later.

Never got bit by a live beaver. I did electrocuted by a dead one once. I tied a 330 to an electric fence post that the creek ran under. He tangled up that cable something fierce around that post. While trying to lift him to get to the cable, I stood up to high and a barb from an electrified barbed wire (set on high apparently) went through my mesh ball cap and shut my lights out cold. At the moment that I regained consciousness, I did not know what happened. I remember bracing myself for the rest of tree that I thought had fell on me to finish the job.
One thing that I did learn from it was that if I ever do go postal and the judge asks me how do I want to be executed, I'm going to tell him, "Give me the chair Bossman."
I didn't feel a thing when that bobwire touched the top of my dome.

I was camped on a river with a friend and we saw a beaver swimming up the river not to far from shore. So he shoots it and I jump in the boat and row out and get there just as he stops flopping. I am looking for him and see him rolling over with the current on the bottom. I move the boat over to him and reach down and grab him by a back leg. I lift him up and I am shaking the water off him holding him over the side of the boat. All a sudden he curls up and is going for my forearm mouth wide open. I throw him back in the water and he swims hard making a big wake and goes right to shore. My buddy gives him another one and finishes him off.

A couple of years ago, a guy nearby had set out snares for beaver. He was new to trapping. He hung a snare at a den hole. When he checked the set, he had a beaver alright, up under the bank. A tug of war ensued, and the beaver came out. An Angry Beaver. It latched onto his hand and bit his finger…badly.

Back in the day, ( late 80's early 90's) while doing pest control, here in PA we had to catch them alive and transport them to another location and release them. While working for the U.S. fish and wildlife service on our local refuge, I've handled literally hundreds of live beaver. Rather than invest in several costly Hancock traps, which were the best available at the time, I used snares. I would then transfer the Beaver to to Racoon size cages for transport. Since most of the problem Beaver were right by water control structures, my wife would accompany me, sit in the truck and laugh at the antics as i wrestled with the Beaver. Those were some pretty exciting rodeos.

Once I was checking traps on a small pond and saw I had a live beaver on a drowning rod that was not deep enough for a hind foot catch. As I approached the set, I tripped on a beaver cut stub and fell face forward right on top of the beaver which was going wild at the time. I put my arms down to catch myself and to keep my head from going under and could feel the beaver bumping against my left arm as my chest waders started to fill from the top. I have struggled with a lot of live beaver in my time but that was as close as I ever got to getting bitten.

I'm just happy to be here! Today I'm as young as I'll ever be and and older than I've ever been before!

Paul, I've had to do that once or twice with my hatchet, but I hate to as it means I'm out $3 for the skull.

X2

Why would you want to handle a live beaver? I can't think of a good reason.

I don't care how nice the hand soap smells, you should never walk out of the restroom sniffing your fingers.

Want to and have to. Two different things.

I one time boated up to a set, saw the trap gone (330), and then over in the reeds about 8 ft away saw a beaver tail sticking out. Got out of the boat with my waders and grabbed by the tail what I thought was going to a dead beaver. All you-know-what broke loose and I almost had the experience of water skiing with a very alive beaver as the power source. Got good and soaked form those hind feet. Turned out I had a dead beaver under water and the one I grabbed the tail of was not in a trap! Just hiding! Got him into the boat finally and head shot with my 22. About a 55 pounder.

To release him when you catch them out of season in a coon set.
Back foot catch isn't too bad, just wait unto his head is under water. Front foot catch is a bit more tricky.
Timing is everything. I can't imagine using a catch pole on one, but I guess it could work too.

Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.
