I THINK their main complaint is time off.
They get something like 30 days per year, but using any takes a week or two advanced request, and are basically on call 24/7 the rest of the time.

On call 24..7 holidays weekends and no sick pay....it's not wages that is holding up the contract..we won't sick pay and not forced to use vacation to go to the doctor

What authority does Congress have to settle a strike? Amtrak I can see. But with Union Pacific? Burlington Northern? Norfolk Southern? Those are private outfits are they not?

The railroad shutting down could be an extremely serious matter for Americans if it isn’t resolved quickly, especially after the supply chain issues and price increases we’ve experienced over the last few years. Does the Mafia still control much of the Railroad work force? I've heard lots of interesting old stories about what used to go on in Ohio, especially around Marion. 2 of my great grandfathers were railroad bosses and my grandfather's first cousin, who I went to Sicily with, was in the railroad for life.

[/quote] Sounds like a good time to strike, and get decent working conditions. Worked for a company for 34 yrs. We got 1/2 day sick leave a month for the 34 yrs I worked there. They wanted to break the union so they took sick leave away. The union membership accepted the contract. I didn't,I retired when I was 53 best thing I ever did.

I've always heard it was more about work hours then pay. I don't care how much money you make. If you're not around to spend it who cares. The other item to note is that for many years the RR's have been consolidating and now 4 or 5 RR's control the lions share of cross country shipping. Maybe with a strike all the containers being shipped from the west coast to the east will now go through the Panama canal and unload in the east. If the RR's start losing business the strike will end in a hurry. When I dealt with unions who threatened to go on strike we put a plan in place for Mangement to fill slots and keep the plant working. When the realized the strike could hurt them more then help them they changed their minds.
