That was good. Somewhere in my junk I have a book called the "Outlaw Hunter" about market hunting ducks. A small skiff with a punt gun permanently mounted in the bow was popular and the boat was paddled at night into a raft of ducks and they were water swatted. The 0 gauge punt gun shot a pound and a half of shot!

I have nothing clever to put here.

Those old hunters would mount a cannon on their boat called a punt gun. Ease into a flock out on the water then touch it off. I have thought about building one with some oil field pipe. What stops me is I am afraid the temptation to test it on water fowl would be to great. Specially if I got to sipping on some of that swamp water the cajun had. I bet mounted facing backwards would deter tail gaters of your pickup though.

My Dad's Dad hunted ducks for the market. My Dad said that when he was a kid his Dad and hunting partner would often shoot a case of shells a day. There was 20 boxes of shells in a case then, so 500 shells. He said when his Dad got home from hunting his Mom and brother and him would clean ducks, often a boat full. He used live decoys.

I got book here somewhere my mother bought me about old time market gunners. Some them boys shot piles of birds. Most swatted on water with punt guns.
I even met some old guys when I was younger. Never shot a duck on the wing. They hunted for the table and didn't waste a shot that might miss. Was even better yet if they could line up more than 1 bird.

They didn't use that much shot...whatever they could put in the punt gun was good to go...mostly nails and bolts...market hunting was a primary staple of the economy in our area of the Lower Eastern Shore of MD.

The Outlaw Gunner is a good one
Marsh Tales is another good one

Both focus on the Chesapeake areas of hinting, while Marsh tale sis very focused on the Chincotrague area

They also used a lot of "duck traps"

The days of market hunting are generally portrayed by anti hunters as how hunters always went about hunting .In truth it was a business Not really in any way related to hunting as we know it here in America today . The reason it was in demand at the time was the population was growing at a fast rate and market hunting was one way for those people to obtain food .Ad from those market hunters came a group of people while involved in the sale of wildlife and game as a food source realized that the populations could not sustain the large number of animals being killed for market .Often times it was those same hunters that began to advocate for laws for protection of wildlife during certain times of the year And also limiting the number of animals that could be legally taken .And those changes in the laws have helped animals throughout the USA to now have been able to repopulate to numbers similar to how they where before market hunting was part of everyday life for many people I do not look down on the market hunters and their life style Instead I try to see how their involvement was .just a natural way that things where in those days I find how they found ways to be more efficient And that made them understand that it could not keep going on . An from that the conservation of wildlife began to take shape.

The traps are basically a funnel trap of differ designs. They are made out of wire mesh and set in shallow water and baited with barley. They have a top to keep ducks in and hawks out. The entrance doors are low so the duck has to ride low to get in. They can be as simple as a circle with over lap and closed at the top and a small opening where the trap mesh meets the water. You do best if you can pick a spot the ducks want to set on their own. I also think pre baiting would be a big plus. I helped trap wild duck in traps and with cannon nets. The cannon nets caught a lot more at once.
