That was good. Somewhere in my junk I have a book called the "Outlaw Hunter" about market hunting ducks. A small skiff with a punt gun permanently mounted in the bow was popular and the boat was paddled at night into a raft of ducks and they were water swatted. The 0 gauge punt gun shot a pound and a half of shot!
I have nothing clever to put here.

Those old hunters would mount a cannon on their boat called a punt gun. Ease into a flock out on the water then touch it off. I have thought about building one with some oil field pipe. What stops me is I am afraid the temptation to test it on water fowl would be to great. Specially if I got to sipping on some of that swamp water the cajun had. I bet mounted facing backwards would deter tail gaters of your pickup though.

My Dad's Dad hunted ducks for the market. My Dad said that when he was a kid his Dad and hunting partner would often shoot a case of shells a day. There was 20 boxes of shells in a case then, so 500 shells. He said when his Dad got home from hunting his Mom and brother and him would clean ducks, often a boat full. He used live decoys.

I got book here somewhere my mother bought me about old time market gunners. Some them boys shot piles of birds. Most swatted on water with punt guns. I even met some old guys when I was younger. Never shot a duck on the wing. They hunted for the table and didn't waste a shot that might miss. Was even better yet if they could line up more than 1 bird.

The 0 gauge punt gun shot a pound and a half of shot! They didn't use that much shot...whatever they could put in the punt gun was good to go...mostly nails and bolts...market hunting was a primary staple of the economy in our area of the Lower Eastern Shore of MD.

The Outlaw Gunner is a good one Marsh Tales is another good one
Both focus on the Chesapeake areas of hinting, while Marsh tale sis very focused on the Chincotrague area
They also used a lot of "duck traps"

The traps are basically a funnel trap of differ designs. They are made out of wire mesh and set in shallow water and baited with barley. They have a top to keep ducks in and hawks out. The entrance doors are low so the duck has to ride low to get in. They can be as simple as a circle with over lap and closed at the top and a small opening where the trap mesh meets the water. You do best if you can pick a spot the ducks want to set on their own. I also think pre baiting would be a big plus. I helped trap wild duck in traps and with cannon nets. The cannon nets caught a lot more at once.
