Suppose you have a sign up at your house that reads, "please remove your shoes at the door." and someone you barely know walks right in across your carpet with muddy boots. What would you do?

Ask them to take their boots off and clean up their mess.

Fair enough, what if they come back every few days and do it again?

Then they wouldn't be welcome back.

Then it's time ask them if they are just stupid, or are they just trying to make you made.

If it happens more than twice, its your fault for letting them in.

As a rule, I don't let people I barely know into my house. The only exception would be someone here to perform a service for me and I would immediately let them know that wearing muddy boots on my carpet was unacceptable. If they tried it again i would fire them.

When delivering furniture our store policy was that we couldn't remove our shoes/boots as if anything happened to us then we weren't following store policy so not covered. That said we had a supply of the shoe coverings like they use in the hospital for doctors and nurses,
Otherwise as said wouldn't let them in other then just inside to take them off.

hand them the vacuum cleaner and carpet cleaner spray and a towel , I bet they get the hint very quickly.

Luckily, I've never had someone come in my house that ignorant. Good question, but I'm sure they'd know they made a mess the first time they came in.

Very typical up here to ALWAYS remove your foot gear when going into someone's house. Once in a while you'll see a sign but it is usually 'expected' that you will remove them. I've never had anyone not take them off or at least start to take them off.

I don’t let people I hardly know in my yard, much less my house. But if it was a worker of some sort, they would be buying me a new rug and get a cleaning bill…yes I am that petty, lol. Heck, my kids friends knew better.
