No studded tires allowed in Michigan. Most people don't run "snow tires" anymore. All season radials are on most vehicles.

I assume that's not the UP, I lived in Marquette for a couple of years, all season tires probably wouldn't cut it up there to my thinking, could be wrong tho, but then that was around 72

If I lived where the roads were paved, I would absolutely want studs. 4wd is helpful too but studs feel a lot more positive when trying to stop or start. Intersections are the worst
Where I live I just use chains. Uncle White, long time ago I put a set of chains on a Ford pinto, that little car would go anywhere, it was slow but would get me to town

Roads are cleaned about as fast as it comes down now-a-days.
There comes a point liberalism has gone too far, we're past that point.

Studs are ok on ice but they will cause the tires to "hydroplane" and can be dangerous under certain winter conditions when the studs keep the treads from contacting the surface properly.

Folks can use studs here, and do, but just as many don't. I like them too, but I've got by with good all season radials. Combined with using 4x4 for needed traction, I've done fine for decades. I always put a few hundred pounds of sandbags across the rear axle in the bed every winter, which is good ballast for traction and weight distribution with the front end that keeps me from too easily wanting to spin. I've yanked my share of drivers out of the ditch almost every winter , too.
A bag of emergency clothes and a shovel , added to my other year round emergency tools, and I'm good .

A bit has changed Buzzard lol. Here most don't know what a set of chains are anymore. No one buys "snow tires" because they don't exist anymore, all season radials have put them out to pasture along with the nonexistent recaps where a fella could spend 60 bucks for a full set of "new tires" mounted and balanced. Also they're are no worries about showing up for work on time anymore because that is excused away with a good ole fashioned Canadian I'm sorry.
I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....

When i was a kid dad always changed the station wagon over to snow tires as soon as snow was in the forecast. Took them off as soon as the snow melted. The pickup always had the more aggressive tires on the back. Never had studded tires.

Studs are legal here from the 1st of October until the 1st of May. I have them on a Honda Accord. They make a world of difference.

nope , a few people died , a lot of people forgot how to drive even more never learned , you would swear the state was made up of people from down south these days.
I might be the only person with jumper cables in my truck
there are people who still prepare carry a shovel , a sleeping bag , leave extra early , know how to drive , a bunch of them are probably on this site.
how can we do all these things any more , it is in fashion to be a victim these days , you can't very well be a victim and make everything you do someone elses emergency.
it gets better the farther north you go but southern Wisconsin isn't that far north any more , Wausau might be
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.
