James I cant seem to use cable stakes either. To many rocks and roots for me. Pilot holes dont work when you have to cut them with a steam drill. The only time I can use cable stakes is in the water. Ive just givin up and kept on using drags and rebar where I have too.

Got a heat source? Torch? If you do then you can bend your own drags from rebar without much fuss James. Got a welder? Even easier then..Many different ways to make drags. Only takes about 24"-26" of rebar to make a decent drag. You can up to ten drags from one stick..

Mapp burns pretty hot, about *3000..Not as hot as a reg torch but you can heat metal enought to bend it. 3/4" may take a while. Dig yourself a hole in the ground. Run a pipe into it from the side(metal) Get some charcoal or coal and build a fire in it. Feed air thru that pipe with a shop vac or a hair dryer. Presto! a makeshift forge. Bend metal till your hearts content. Lot faster and a lot cheaper than using up your Mapp gas too.

Glad to see I'm not the only rebar guy out there...and much more experienced folks than I are using rebar as well Same problems: rocks, roots, ect. I'll throw in frozen ground as well. If I have to pound in a pilot hole first befor pounding in a cable stake...might as well just pound in rebar! Plus when things are all froze up all I have to do is give the rebar a couple of twists with the wrench and out they come. No waiting till spring to dig the blasted cable out. Definently a time and place for cable...but 98% of the time I reach for rebar instead. -Skunkly-

Try hammering on 1/4" annealed nuts J-Lord. My guess is you'll break the cable before it slips through the nut. They are call disposable for a reason sometimes, frozen ground is a reason, hard ground is another reason. lol Tight-wad! ~ADC~

lol adc, part of it is "cheap wadness" the other part is i just cant see leaving them in someones field....its almost like littering to me, it wasn't there before i put it there so i don't want to leave them.
otis i made a stake puller from a big crowbar and a hook welded on it to pull the out. pulls mostly straight up.
skunkly, thats exactly what i'm thinkin too, because i've had to make pilot holes for these, but in the winter it might not have to be done as the ground is usually wetter, and we don't get the frozen ground thing here lol.
thanks for the tip cletis, that will work great, because i bend 3/8 rebar by sticking the end in a piece of steel pipe alot easier and just weld on the curved prongs. 'preciate that.
