As most of you know, I had a binary pulmonary embolism that resulted in me being put on blood thinners for a minimum of six months.
Can Any one else here on blood thinners give me some tips on how to be careful while running traps and skinning fleshing critters. Do I have to put myself in bubble wrap for 6 months?

I don’t think you need to put yourself in bubble wrap. I think you need to settle down, eat healthy, and keep some things personal.

I've been on Eliquis for 7 years. Just be careful and have first aid supplies handy if you need them. (Band Aids, bandages, etc.) I've never cut myself so bad that I needed medical help but it takes longer to heal normal cuts. You will bruise a lot easier and it takes longer for the bruises to disappear.

Just keep doing what you're doing. If you cut yourself do what you would always do when you cut yourself; put pressure on it and raise it above the heart. Blood thinners are no big deal. They will make you feel colder than normal that's about it. I've been on them for years, I forget how long. I got a pacemaker too and it ain't gonna slow me down. Good luck to you. All this stuff is scary at first but don't worry you'll be fine.

Had open heart surgery 2 years ago and am on elequis. I'm careful and carry a walking stick for ditches and river banks where a fall is possible. So far no serious cuts while skinning critters. Besides that, life is normal.

I take two baby aspirins per day since valve replacement surgery 9 years ago. Those are not strong thinners, but I would worry much more about hard blunt bumps or trauma to your torso or head then any of the daily things you may do. Bleeding internally is the bigger concern. You can take care of the external cuts etc. Setting around being idle waiting for the next thing to happen is not good for you in many ways.

Be thankful for blood thinners they save lives. Clots are not forgiving! Only thing is I feel cold all the time but just put a few more clothes on in winter!

bblwi nailed it, I take a blood thinner and a low dose aspirin per day. I don't really recall when I started, probably 3 or 4 years ago. My biggest problem happened about a year ago, I bumped my leg on the corner of the car door. I didn't think much of it at the time even though I had quite a bump on my leg by the end of the day. I don't want to bore you with a long story so let's just say a hematoma developed in my leg, that led to an 8 day stay in the hospital and surgery.

I got myself a seniors' GPS.
Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination,
it tells me why I wanted to go there.

Having had open heart surgery back in April, things were going well, until this past December, when I blacked out at the local post office, after bending down to retrieve a package from a lock box. After being pulled to my feet, I drove myself to a nearby hospital, to find I had blood clots blocking both of the veins on either side of my neck . . .
( Well, I knew something was wrong )
They admitted me me and then took me by ambulance to Christ Hospital in downtown Cincinnati, where I under went surgery to remove those clots, that, if had broken free, could have either caused a stroke or ended my life. I was released after a week of being in the hospital.
Today I am on two types of blood thinners, Plavix and Eliquis, and I have a stint in the shape of a Y.
One thing about it, I don't want to cut myself shaving again. . .

I still trap, but I'm very careful about what I do.

Likely most of the folks that were drooling over the deep fried catfish thread, are on blood thinners??

Yup,

walleyed is on Zarelto for about eight years now.

Have lost all tolerance to cold.

bumps or bruises to my lower legs are a real problem.

Better than having a stroke.

yup had my first DVT at 41

nearly everyone over 40 in my family is on thinners

Xeralto or Leviqust which sure beats the warfarin everyone used to be on

Elequis for about four years. Take two a day. Can’t feel any difference. Cuts heal just fine. Stop a few days before surgery or colon exam.

Biggest health concerns on blood thinners include:

Blunt trauma to the abdomen that could lead to a lacerated kidney or liver (dangerous enough even if not on thinners) need to be looked at as soon as possible in er or hospital. (Large amounts of blood can be lost into the abdominal cavity)

Blunt trauma to the thighs resulting in large areas of bruising. (Enough blood can pool in the thigh to cause serious health concerns)

Any sharp blows to the head either caused by falls or strikes, need to be looked at as well. ( Two types of brain strokes, clots and bleeding. Both cause death to brain cells resulting in cognitive and motor skill issues and even death. Falls and strikes lead to bleeding more easily when on thinners.)

Don’t take aspirin for headaches or pain, thins the blood further. Tylenol usually recommended.

As mentioned in earlier posts, day to day nicks and cuts usually only require a little additional time and attention. You do want to get more educated on bleeding control for major cuts and lacerations as a precaution.

These complications are rare, but those on blood thinners just need to be aware.

Also don't forget that high blood pressure and drain you faster than blood thinners.....so they told me when they would not pull my tooth because of my HBP, funny thing is when I pulled it, I spit blood once and that was it...do you think they could be lying?

I take warfarin for a genetic clotting disorder. Have been on it for 10+ years. Other than the monthly blood work I've had no issues. I'm just a little more careful and methodical in what I do but haven't stopped doing anything that I did before I was put on thinners
