GREAT FALLS — Three juvenile grizzly bears in Montana tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus this fall, according to Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks.

The agency said in a news release on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, that the three bears - one near Augusta, one near Dupuyer, and one near Kalispell - were observed to be "in poor condition and exhibited disorientation and partial blindness, among other neurological issues."

The three bears were euthanized due to their sickness and poor condition.

These were the first documented cases of HPAI in grizzly bears. A fox and a skunk in Montana also tested positive for HPAI last year, and the virus has also been found in raccoons, black bears, and even a coyote in other states and countries.

“We suspect these mammals probably get the virus from consuming infected birds,” said FWP Wildlife Veterinarian Jennifer Ramsey.

Avian influenza (AI) virus is a naturally-occurring virus in birds. AI viruses are classified into two groups, based on the severity of disease they cause in infected poultry. Low pathogenic AI viruses generally cause no clinical illness, or only minor symptoms in birds. HPAI viruses are extremely infectious and fatal to poultry and some species of wild birds.

Although the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention considers risk of HPAI spread to humans to be very low, Montanans are advised to take precautions when handling game birds, sick or dead birds and mammals they find. Whenever possible, avoid contact with sick or dead wildlife. Even if an animal is not suspected to have died from a contagious disease, gloves should always be worn if a dead animal must be handled for disposal.

FWP staff would like to know about unusual or unexplained cases of sickness and/or death of wild birds and animals by calling their local wildlife biologist or the wildlife lab in Bozeman at 406-577-7880 or 406-577-7882.

This bird flu is all across the US and looks like it is going to be a big problem for other animals as well.

Maybe that’s why we didn’t get many ducks or dove down here.

I heard about 6 or 8 years ago that China had went to great lengths to establish a data bank of DNA from the western culture and they actually had the largest data bank in the world of it. Always worried me why they wanted it. But considering your DNA can make you immune or less effected by some diseases and that diseases are being designed in labs its a bit alarming. Disease warfare has been researched for a very long time and with the availability of DNA it can make it more targeted. Don't most ancestry research businesses get ur DNA and provide you with the results for free? Considering nothing is free what are they getting out of the deal. Disease warfare can target animals and plants important to the food supply also. Not just people. This is some concern about gmo crops. A gene or 2 could be added that could be used for ill intent. Considering China owns very large businesses in the agriculture seed industry here in this country they could greatly affect this nation's food security if aren't careful.

Misdiagnoses. They were just too much in a hurry to test for “climate change”.
Doubt me? Give it time…..
