Man, what a weekend! This year I donated a hunt to the FTA adventure auction. Two guys purchased the hunt and drove to NC from Missouri. They came ready to do some killing! The hunt was originally for geese Saturday morning and rabbits hunted with beagles Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon. We managed to get in a couple bonuses!
Saturday morning we hunted geese at a local horse farm. They were coming back there to loaf starting about 8:30 AM. We waited them out and shot 20 geese with 5 guys. We were one more group away from having our total limit of 25. I am tickled with 20 though
Saturday afternoon it was time to run the beagles. The dogs did great and really stayed on the rabbits. I think we have a coyote problem where we were hunting. When the dogs jumped a rabbit the rabbit was gone to the next county. You couldn't even hear the dogs barking anymore they were so far off. Eventually, the rabbit would circle back towards us and we would kill him, but I can't remember a hunt where we have ever had rabbits run like that
Saturday night we got in a little bonus hog hunt with a friend of mine that stays on them. We don't have hogs right here where I'm at, but an hour drive east will get you in the thick of them. The guys brought their thermal scopes and were able to shoot two big sows. I've never dealt with the thermals much but it was really cool to watch. Definitely will have to do that more. One sow was huge! Knocking on 300 pounds for sure
Sunday we were supposed to go back rabbit hunting but the dogs were still give out from the day before. My buddy that owns them didn't want to take them back out. Luckily another friend of mine has a Feist that he squirrel hunts with. It is really a blast to go out and see that dog work and try to pick the squirrel out of the treetops. We hunted a beautiful farm on the river and had a great time. We were able to knock down 10 squirrels and probably made 10 more trees but the squirrels go in holes in the tree.
I'd be lying if I said that being a "guide" for a weekend isn't stressful. If it was only a goose hunt or only a rabbit hunt it would have been easier, but easy isn't fun! The guys that purchased the hunt were great and they got a lot of action. Can't wait to do it again next year. Thanks Mark and Ken!
