I have a:
BS in Mechanical Engineering
BS in International Business
MBA in Finance

I've had the pleasure of working with some really talented and smart people over the years, I would take any skilled tradesman with farming background over any Big 10 engineering grad for my projects.
I always like what Ted Nugent said- "I never went to college... I was too busy learning."

So I would like your input on the following if you don't mind.

I was in college for a as a wildlife biologist major myself before I felt it was a waste of time.
What really turned me was I ran into a pair of guys with masters degrees in the natural resource fields and when I found out what they were doing it shocked me.
They were working at a golf course due to the fact that jobs in the fields were very hard to get.
I also learned at the time (mid '70's) that vets had preference in hiring.

Since then I have run into many young people that have degrees in natural resource fields that are doing other than what they thought they'd be doing.
All not by their choice but the situation of more applicants than jobs.
I have a niece that has a Phd in Aquatic Entomology that ended up as a biology teacher.
Not what she wanted and a waste of a Phd education.

One of the young guys I know tried to get a internship on a study of wolves in WI. He told me there was Professors trying out for the job. He was very disheartened by the whole experience.
What chance did a guy with a BS have against guys with Phds for just an internship job?

So my question for your comments is the picture I paint pretty much true?
Very hard to get a job in many of the Natural resource fields?
way more applicants than jobs?

The field is extremely competitive. You can have 100-150 people applying for an entry level position. Many of those applicants will have masters. What (entry level menial jobs) at one time only took an AS in wildlife tech/management, now require at least a bachelors with the intention of going for a masters. I saw a job posted not long ago looking for a field bio tech. You had to be working on getting a masters.

You almost have to specialize in one discipline.

Delaware will be hiring a furbearer biologist soon if anyone is interested in applying. Keep an eye out on Delawarestatejob.com

Yea, it is but some jobs require a bachelor degree before you can get it. I had to get a 4 year degree to become commissioned as an army officer. Never used my degree and never hung it on the wall but I wanted to become an officer so I got one. That's all it was good for.

My dad insisted all three sons go and graduate from college, he didn’t care what you did afterwards he just wanted us to have the piece of paper but then my four year college tuition was six thousand dollars total and I drove back and forth plus checked traps on the way to school in the winter

College a waste of time? No. It led me a degree in Auto Mechanics, which led to coaching, which led to a couple more degrees and my wife, which led to Alaska and two adopted children and 38 years of coaching, teaching, hunting, fishing and trapping.Have turned full circle and now back to working in the dirt in ND.

BS in Civil Engineering from UNC Charlotte, minor in Mathematics
MS in Civil Engineering from NC State

Go to college for something you can use. Don't go if you don't know what you want to do. Don't take out loans to pay your tuition

Gotta live up to the nickname...

I worked in manufacturing and did an engineering job without a degree. I was the second one of 5 at the place without a degree.
I'll agree with the above, the most knowledgeable engineer by far that worked at the place had no degree, I was hired to replace him as he was retiring.
The man was a wealth of knowledge that no college degree offers. He could look at problems and 9 of 10 times he knew what was going on.
The other 1 time he knew where to look to gather the info to figure it out.
He got this knowledge while at the job by being observant, working with the tradesmen, reading and thru trial and error. None of these things are taught in college.

I have worked with many engineers thru my years and 1 out of 10 is worth while, the others are best ignored. Go into the shop ask the tradesmen what's going on, they almost always have a better idea than the college boys.

That was over 45 years ago and its much more useless now than ever.

One does not need a college education to be successful in life, I'm proof of it.

X2 for me. Way better off to go to a technical college and get a two year degree. I found the first two years of college are generals having mostly nothing to do with your major. Not to mention the liberal garbage most colleges try to brain wash in you today. In a technical college you get started on your major your first semester.

I took a BS in Wildlife/Fisheries Management, then a MS in Wildlife Management. 50 years of practical work experience during and after the degrees was the real education. I tried not to let the University interfere with my education. Finished off my "education" by studying coonman's writings. I've also got 2 Phd's. One in the back of my pickup and one in the shop (post hole diggers).

Did one semester in college before coach Lou Holtz told me I probably wouldn’t be playing anymore with the one good knee I had left. Dropped out and went to work construction.

Educated in a small school system in the swamplands of the UP.
96 pupils in K-12 classes.
Turned down a scholarship in Tool Design Engineering upon graduation.
( bucksnbears and 160 weren't the only ones finding their way in life. )
Went from there to running a multimillion dollar auto manufacturing plant .
Started as a spot welder , rose to the top quickly.
My theory was " If you are working for a stupid boss , Take his job and do it right".
Retired 29 days short of 35yrs.
Private owner got hooked into the Bernie Madoff Scam.
Lost 10-12 million in operating capital.
At 70 some yrs old he decided to close it down.

No college.
I will say back then a "College Degree" was a valuable start in life.
Now a days its a service job for many of the graduates.
