What is your preferred method to prevent gelling of off-road diesel in colder conditions. I see a lot of individuals mix #1 and #2 and others utilize an anti-gel additive. What’s been your experience in preventing gelling in cold weather and preventing wax settling during storage?

K-1 or additives. #1 and #2 heating oil gels. Once it gels you're into a warming process to the best of my knowledge.

Some additives emulsify some separate, power service emulsifies and you burn the water, some say it can rust injectors, I never had a problem with power service, it doesn’t take as much with this low sulfur fuel. The red bottle is for if you’re gelling.

If you get gelled. Best product to have on hand.

Before we had this modern version of diesel there were two grades. #1 and #2. In cold weather I used #1 and added about 2% unleaded gas and power service. The gas and a shot of ether helped it start easier when cold. Dont add gas or use ether much any more but power service AHEAD of time sure works. Changing a froze filter on the side of the road when its -14 below and windy is no fun. I still fill the filters with ATF instead of diesel to keep injectors clean too. Froze up on the side of the road fill the NEW filter with whatever anti gel you have with you. If you freeze up while driving its going to be the water separator filter if you treated your fuel properly AHEAD of time. None of that stuff keeps water condensation from occurring inside your tanks or allows it to burn with the fuel. In the winter don't wait to change fuel filters. Do it often. BEFORE you lose power. Last several years I been using HOWES fuel treatment. That works as good as power service.

I buy off road pre blended from a fuel distributer locally. They know more about blending than I do and keep local heavy machinery operational in a cold Mn winter. They use 70-30 (#2 to #1) blend plus an additive.

If your in GA though in Jan and fill up for a trip to Chicago you have to treat it yourself. Last time I gelled up up was here at home. Took me and my grandson about three hours to get it running. Had to buy more anti gel and a can of ether. Was predicted to get down around 0 Fahrenheit so I asked what their fuel was treated to before filling up. Told me 20 below. I dont believe em now. #2 gels at about 17F. If its going to get that cold I treat it anyway.

I rarely see #1 for sale anymore. Attendants will just tell you their fuel is winter blend.

what do I do to avoid cold weather gelling?
Put the tractor in a heated workshop.
Works every time.

By the way Off road Diesel is more expensive at my local station than reg diesel.
.80 more. I bought reg diesel instead of the off road stuff, I doubt if they will ever sell the rest of the off road stuff till the price of reg diesel goes over the price of off road.

Quoting just because this needs read again.

Our fuel supplier treats with power service artic when filling tanks in the winter, the only complaints we've had are from people who haven't recently serviced their fuel filters. Power service kleen is good stuff if you have a lot of water in your fuel.

The last zero degree cold spell we had the county road crew's bulk fuel gelled up and they were pulling fuel out of our pumps at the station. I think their fuel conditioner company may have got fired after that.

We always cut our #2 fuel oil for our off road logging equipment with 50% kerosene. Never have problems down to -40F.

I have mostly dealt with equipment out in the middle of nowhere, at the end of the day fill the tank and drain the water separator. Have mostly used power service white bottle. 911 if gelling. Like I said before power service emulsifies the water and you burn it. Others do fine with Howes, a de-emulsifier, I would think you just end up catching and draining the water separator more.

I dont drain water. Filters are cheap enough its easier to replace them.

Last time I gelled it was -6. It hasn't happened since. Treatment is cheap.

and after 8 hours of fishing on the Big Windy grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr puff=puff

must happen quite often on Lake Of The Woods with southern boys coming up and.......49er can verify that
