I have fire ants and scorpions here, boots on unless I know they have trapped something nasty on the sole. Wood floors hide the little basturds until you step on them.

Every morning, I approach my boots with the same wariness you would a mine field or VC ambush point.

Yes…some of the places I work I wouldn’t want that junk tracking through my house.

Heck no. I am retired and literally might go in and out of the house twenty or thirty times a day.

I posted this question because I was curious if there were any regional differences; it doesn't look like it.

I was a little surprised to see that Boco doesn't take his shoes off. When I was a kid and lived in BC, everyone took their shoes off. We moved there from Oregon and we were pretty surprised by that custom. This was in the early 1960's. I always assumed it was a Canadian practice.

I hate wearng shoes (especially lace up) and will happily take them off wherever possible; especially in the house.

Waggler, it is an Asian custom that goes back with especially the Japanese for centuries. They are among the cleanest people on earth, and always have indoor shoes for themselves or guests handy right at the door as soon as you enter .

I learned this when living in Hawaii, which is filled with multicultural people . It made perfect sense, and after trying it, I saw a marked improvement in my hard work staying that way in a house.

Also, from a sheer health issue, clean kept, bare feet , or with socks, enables the best foot health, which translates up through the whole body. Acupressure points on foot soles have proven how effective it keeps health of organs in the body , and clean air, bending , and natural pressure in walking without shoes revitalizes circulation and healing from the ground up. I find it pretty fascinating that the whole body's health is affected from how clean one keeps their teeth and mouth hygiene, and in how feet are the same. From top down, and from the bottom up.

I've seen service/appliance workers enter homes , with knee high lace up boots, and without one word or thought, fingers flying, unlace their boots partway, slide them off, then proceed to work in a house , sliding into them without lacing up if they had to enter and go out several times. No problem at all. A habit they were accustomed to doing, not lazy or complaining .

I have had only one whiner in the decades I've practiced this , an old cowboy , whose boots would have easily slid right off. He huffed and puffed about not doing this , was surprised when I didn't cave in, but said, unless he wants to clean my floor afterwards, then stay out. He looked as if I had smacked him.

Temporary situations where work is going on, and a special need is necessary , I don't mind. The work area is cleaned up after. That doesn't happen often.

I work hard to keep a very clean, organized house. And it will stay that way. It is called respect.

Mother got mad if we drug dirt thru the house so it was shoes off. We didn't wear shoes much during the summer, just for school and winter.

If I'm in to stay, shoes off but I'm not above tip toeing thru my house with them on if I'm going right back out. I'd sooner be barefoot anyhow.

If I will be inside the rest of the day I sit down and take them off. Otherwise no.

What do you do with people who dont wear shoes outdoors?Make them wash their feet before they come in?
We were barefoot all summer growing up from may to october.
People cleaned floors etc on a regular basis back then regardless.Didnt wait for it to look dirty.Quick damp mop every evening was the norm.

Like I said, we take ours off to save on the cleaning. We work and play outside! We don’t have city folk, desk jobs that require us to stay clean!! laugh

I live on a farm. You take your shoes off before coming in. Most farm houses here have a "mud room" between the two front doors. [Linked Image]

I don't expect a stranger/visitor to remove their shoes. If crap covered I'd hold them at the door tho! lol.

I take them off in other's homes but leave them on in mine. Too much work to do inside and out to spend precious hours removing shoes only to put them on again a few minutes later

People shouldn't have stinky feet, that isn't a natural condition. Stinky feet result from both not washing your feet, unclean socks, and more importantly not allowing air to get to your feet.

If I lived alone, shoes would stay on. Since I do not live alone, I take them off if she's home. If she isn't home they stay on, and I sweep any dirt under the rug before she gets home like any thoughtful husband would.
