The trap won’t rust much in water it needs air to rust.Just dip in water once a day and let dry till you get a light coat of rust then treat to your liking. But you do need to get oil off first.

just de-grease and wax, why would you start to destroy new traps ?? This^^^^ no need to rust. Wash in Dawn dish soap, rinse and wax 'em. Set 'em next day.

I wouldn't rust them , but if you want to rust anything first remove all protective coatings wax, oil , paint this would be washing or boiling them boiling gets the wax off and softens many paints
then you want an oxidizer Hydrogen peroxide vinegar and salt will make thing rust fast
so if your looking to make something rusty an oxidizer and not a bucket of water
but I wouldn't rust your traps no need to
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.
