The trap won’t rust much in water it needs air to rust.Just dip in water once a day and let dry till you get a light coat of rust then treat to your liking. But you do need to get oil off first.

This is how I treat my traps. I trap in South Louisiana, and my traps take a beating due to humidity, brackish water, and high acid soil.

1) Old trap gets soak over night in a ice chest with vinegar and water. Next day it gets pressure washed and washed with Dawn.

2) New traps get soaked over night in warm water and Dawn, next say they are pressure washed.

3) Once dried, traps get dipped in a 50/50 mixture of rusty metal primer and acetone. They are then hung up and let to dry overnight.

4) Repeat 3.

The traps will be good for a couple of years and they will hold up to about anything you can throw at them. The more I trap the less I like to rust my traps, as they are a major investment. I'm also getting away from waxing my traps as I think it holds a lot of bad scents.

A vinegar and water solution in a bucket will degrease and cause the trap to rust. Soak / or scrub brush the traps in the solution. Rinse well after completed with a baking soda/water solution to neutralize the acid from the vinegar solution.

Set outside until you get them where you want them to be. You can also run them thru a dish washer cycle to just degrease them just like you are washing them. They will be rusting in the washer once the cycle is complete.

This^^^^ no need to rust. Wash in Dawn dish soap, rinse and wax 'em. Set 'em next day.

I wouldn't rust them , but if you want to rust anything
first remove all protective coatings wax, oil , paint this would be washing or boiling them boiling gets the wax off and softens many paints

then you want an oxidizer Hydrogen peroxide vinegar and salt will make thing rust fast

so if your looking to make something rusty an oxidizer and not a bucket of water

but I wouldn't rust your traps no need to
