Do you see any real big difference from the #4 to #5's on beaver that would make it a game changer to go with 5's instead of 4's?

The wider jaw spread and higher jaws on #44 B & L's make
for a higher up catch, and greater catch percentage than the smaller # 4's.

IMO

Yes, that is true on the spread, and I see that it could make a difference in catch success. Just not sure the percentage of success between the two are that much different.

I use them for beaver a lot, in very safe places I’ll use a Bridger brawn.

Used properly, 4's work fine. Used properly, 5's work better. Over time they will add to your catch. I've used them since the early 80's. At times I would lay down a 4 1/2 Newhouse. A trapper has great confidence in a catch when using those! Bigger is better for beaver, to a degree, of course. The mountain men traps I've seen were substantial. Yes there is something to it.

For me, the 44's break easier over my knee to.

I have nothing clever to put here.

If you're getting them for a decent price, you should by them IMO. Give them a try and see for yourself why all big beaver trappers use them. I bet you like them, and if not they hold their resell value great.

When the Bridger 5's LS came out I bought a alot of them- pans were terrible. Switched them out to PIT pans-much better. Then center swiveled them and put teeth in them. Very good trap but I hate taking beaver out of them. I have pretty much gone back to the smaller traps and do just as well. Still use a few 85's for certain situations.

Some great advice and thank you. I will buy 4 of them you convinced me of it. I do believe the break over like 160 is true because I have noticed that also.

What are they specifically? Brand? Longsprings? Coil? Offset jaws? I'm sure there are people here with some experience with any of them that could offer advice on the use of them if you'd like.

I use all #5 size traps for beaver except one #3 jump that I'll use for front foot catches.

Not sure on brand but will go take a look at them. I do know they are coil and are not an off-set and are round jaw the way it sounded.

Duke makes a fine #5 DLS…right out of the box it has a PIT style pan/dog, baseplate and center swivel. Be forewarned, they are stout!

I picked up a Montana #5 from John Graham about 8 years ago. It’s connected on several beavers.

snowy, those specs makes them sound like a fine trap to me. I like round, non-offset jawed, coilspring traps.
