I have not reloaded shot shells in a VERY along time. When I did, I always used Winchester AA. It seems like they used to be high brass back then. I still buy and use them but they are low brass. Are they worth saving for reloading?

There is high brass and low brass, doesn’t really mean much. What you need to be concerned about is high and low BASE.

Peters "Blue Magic" were very good shells to reload too :-)

Never saw a high brass AA but Mike has a good point. Only thing I liked beside the AA was Remington blue peters. Built just like a AA and would withstand reloading many times

I shot many of the abovementioned shells and also some of the Federal paper hulls , but watch out for pin holes around the top of the brass if you see one toss that hull ha ha !

The only difference I found with high brass or low brass was the gun I was using either one in. Some guns didn't like the high brass reloads.

To answer the question literally, yes, they are worth reloading.

But, for what?

I make the assumption you are reloading target loads. Nowadays the main difference is instead of a formed tapered hull, they have a straight hull with a tapered insert. 'The internal volume is unchanged.

The brass height is inconsequential.

Use to load a lot of AA hulls with 5 and 6 shot ,all low brass, no problems.

When I reloaded, it was for target loads. I no longer shoot target and don’t have the equipment anymore. I only use them anymore to protect the bird feeder and my wife’s flowers from yard vermin. I can’t bring myself to throw out the empties of my store bought AA’s. I continue to save them but I really don’t have a reason to other than habit.

Winchester made two nearly identical shells, both described as "compression formed". They were one piece bodies, with tapered cup above the primer. The low brass were sold as Win AA's with 8 point crimp and the high brass as Winchester Super X with 6 point crimp. Aside from the brass and crimp pattern, they were the same and either could be loaded the same. Heavy or lite.

Some loaders, like my old Texan, used an extrusion type die to resize the brass head (vs. a collet style sizer on the Mec loaders), and that sometimes caused issues......not unlike sizing a bottleneck rifle case and not using any lube to do it. Case friction ran very high on the high brass. If I was going to load them today, I'd use a bit of sizing wax on them.

Remarkably, I recently tested some old Remington / Peters high brass hulls from back in the day......same era of 70's and 80's.........and they are actually brass coated / washed STEEL heads. A magnet will pick them up. I thought steel heads was a new thing, but apparently not.

But then as now, the old Win AA compression formed hulls were as good as it gets. Haven't been made in 20 to 25 years and are sill being used today. Guys still sitting on stashes of still new ammo and thousands and thousands of those compression formed hulls.

AA empties are pretty easy to sell. I used to sell quite a few years ago. I hauled them to a skeet / trap range. I was selling mainly 410 empties to skeet shooters. They buy / sell all gauges of them. 12 ga are the cheapest, but if you can get a little off the price of what you are paying it does not hurt.

If you have a Scheels store they may buy the empty hulls from you. I’ve sold several hundred the the Scheels in Rapid City. I’ve got a couple 5 gallon buckets full for my own use.

I reload AA 20 gauge hulls. They seem to last forever. I know I have loaded some of them 8-10 times before they show signs of wear on the side of the case just above the brass.
However....I prefer the Remington STS hulls. They have a slightly greater volume than the AA and my MEC likes crimping the STS better. The end product is a better looking shell with the STS

New Remington gun club 12 ga hulls we have had 5-6 brass separations from the plastic hulls in last few months shooting trap - I would stay away from those but the better STS and Nitros are still good.

When I was growing up, my neighbor would let me use his shot shell press as long as I bought all my own supplies. I’d either ride my bike to the gun shop or he’d give me a ride to do it. His setup was in his machine shed and I just went and reloaded whenever I wanted…those were the days!! Eventually, we moved and I never did buy my own equipment.

He turned me onto AA’s and I’ve used them ever since.

We used to buy once shot AA cases for .08 cents apiece years ago to reload.
