Any of you guys on here been buying silver dollars? I am about ready to stop collecting and sell them all . So many fakes floating around this area. China is really getting good at making them.

I have a hand full I picked up several years ago from a coin shop. If I buy any more it would most likely be from a reputable dealer to avoid the fakes. But I won't have extra cash to dump onto things like that for sometime.

I'm a few years behind on my collection. I need to get it up to date.

As for the rest of my PMs, I'll just hold them for SHTF purposes. They have increased in value significantly.

Or my kids can sell them after they toss me in the hole.

The price is stuck between $22 and $23.50 lately per oz.

I think old USA silver coins would be better to purchase than silver rounds, unless the rounds are old silver dollars.

I just got into collecting old silver coins a few years ago And older landowner that had been giving me permission to trap for a number of years decided to sell his property and go to a retirement home I had gotten to know them well and I often would stop in as time allowed to see if they needed any thing taken care of Sometimes they would ask me to pick up items at the local store or get a gas can filled. Or maybe they had a problem at the house that I cold fix . So they sold the house in a few months and now needed help to move He offered to pay me to help them go through things and pack up to go to their new place I declined that offer with the understanding that II would be willing to help .But I would not be willing to help if he was paying me I explained that if money was part of the deal than it would be a job to me .And I was not looking for a job and money would mean I now was obligated to help at his request One day while getting stuff organized He came across several partial. books of old coins WHEAT PENNIES. BUFFALO NICKELS . SILVER DIMES & QUARTERS & BEN FRANKLIN HALF DOLLARS where a total of 283 coins /He told me he would sell the entire collection to me at face value He did not want to deal with running to a buyer for what he had in those old blue coin books Face value came to$ 86.00 At first I turned down his offer but on second thought decided to buy them At face value I had nothing to lose Later he told me he had located 90 plus silver coins They included Morgan & Peace dollars Liberty halves and Kennedy halves . Ike dollars He was asking $300 for all of them total .I said that I was not in a position to tie up a lot of money But I said yes I would take them at the number That was less than 5 years ago And yes THAT WAS A BARGAIN And mt guess is that he had gotten them at much less So he had made a nice amount of profit for what he paid for them . Once I had them and started to look at the condition they where in I started to get a sense of pride in owning those old silver coins And weight and feel of them .And the sound that they make when you flip them They are solid and sound like real money Coin collecting can be a lot of fun is what l learned once I got started in it .

Buy from a reputable dealer, NOT EBAY. Denver Pawn got nailed with three Monster boxes of fakes this spring. Probably as mentioned in a previous post (made in China)! 1500 ozs. is a painful hit. Buy junk silver, it's almost impossible to counterfeit.

We (my family) just sold around 50 Morgan dollar pieces at my parents estate sale. The lowest we got was 35 dollars on up to 210 for the top one. I think it was a CC mint.

Take the top two out, I'd guess the rest of them averaged 50-55 dollars. I bought 7 of the cheaper ones t a 42 dollar average. The dates ranged 1878 up to 1900 for the most part.

I don't know exactly what a silver round is but like I posted, coins are beating silver spot price by a mile.

I got an education on something else that brought big money, and we almost didn't mention them to the auctioneer........ Post cards.

We had some he sold separate that went for over 300 bucks. Mom had them in photo albums and even after he picked some out the ones he sold by themselves, the albums brought over 100 bucks each.

Hippie a silver round is silver bullion produced by private mints in coin form so to speak.

To technically be considered a coin it has to be produced by a government mint and have an actual face value. Some examples are an American Silver Eagle which has a face value of $1 or a Canadian Maple which has a face value of $5 CDN

John, I like to think I have a pretty good understanding of the bullion and it's relation to Numismatics. It boils down to an individual reasoning for acquiring bullion v Numis.

Marty, that is a fair assessment when it comes to constitutional silver like quarters, halves and dimes. While the percentage isn't high, there are fakes out there. The chinks don't care. Morgan dollars are another story.
