Hi all,
I recently won the above mentioned shotgun. What should i know about using steel shot in an older shotgun? Its got a fixed modified choke. so far ive read that as long as it doesnt haver a full choke there should be no problems.

Sure is a beauty. Reminds me of the fancier guns I seen the old timers using when I was a kid

Can you look up the year made by using the serial number then see if it fell into the years after steel was required?

I doubt that steel shot will harm your modified barrel. I have a 12 mag 30" full that I got in the early 70s, and it handles steel just fine. I also have a Hastings 3" with choke tubes for the same 1100. Handles steel just fine. That 1100 is now 50 years old.

don't do that to that gun!!! If you have to shoot steel use a gun that can be replaced without a treasure hunt needed.

I have an 1100 12 gauge from the 80's. Mine has a slug barrel. I need a bird gun and was told the 1100 had trouble with lighter loads ejecting shells. So the 1187 was born. I got a different gun for birds then instead of buying a bird shot barrel for the 1100. Don't know if I was told the truth, but it was an excuse to buy another gun. Lol.

If you look at the barrel on the left side right in front of the receiver there should be 2 small letters. What are they?

Go ahead and shoot the steel out of it.If it buggers up the choke just hacksaw a few inches off the end.

I had an 1100 with a 30 inch full. Switched to steel and got a ring bulge and end of barrel cocked to the side slightly. Used a copper tubing cutter and cut it off behind the bulge and was very impressed with the pattern after that. Just like BOCO said. I didn't have a vented rib so a pipe cutter worked fine.

Great looking gun!

We have shot steel out of a bunch of them 1100's with no problem. You may want to get on line and order new O ring for it and a couple spares. The O rings dry out from sitting and turn 1100's into a real fancy looking single popper. I used to take the but plate off and store an extra O ring, oiled in plastic bag, in the stock.

Yessir. I learned about keeping extra o rings on hand when I used to shoot an 11-87 special purpose. I got that one from a good friend in Ohio who has since passed away

It will make a fine grouse gun using lead shot.

I have nothing clever to put here.

I plan to use it for geese whenever the occasion calls for it. I was knocking geese down for about 15 years with my 20 gauge model 1300 before switching to 12 gauge. I prefer 20 to be honest. Less buckshots

Worst case, from steel, in that gun is excessive wear on n the barrel if you shoot a ton. Steel won’t blow that barrel unless there’s something else stuck in it.

if it has the STAR in front of the gauge is is supposed to be ok to shoot steel up to #2 as long as it is not a fixed full choke.

that was Remington's marking

I have worked on 100's of 1100. To me they are one of the best auto loader ever made. The Magnum model was designed to shoot 3 inch 1 7/8 lead load. I opened up the gas port in barrel to shoot light 2 3/4. After I was done with them, you could shoot 1 oz trap load thru them.

There are two different 20 ga 1100. The LT is on a 20 ga frame and is a 2 3/4 inch gun. The other is a 20 ga on a 12 ga frame and is the 3 inch model. The 3 inch model is hard to find.

You have a great gun, it will last another 50 yrs.

It’s a sweet handling gun I’ll tell you that. Small frame, light. I give Bobby 5 shots for his single shot 20 next spring. If he can knock down 3 or more geese then he can have it [Linked Image]

He’s still got a couple 410s too so it’s up to him what he wants to use until he can shoot well enough to justify me buying him a benelli (which he talks about on a regular basis)

the gun my dad bought when I was 11 for me to use , 20ga Rem 1100LT mod choke barrel

the LTs were a dream to carry a little harder to find parts for

as I grew dad added a big 1 1/2 inch thick soft recoil pad and when I bought my own 1100 in 12ga he started using it liking the light recoil

Just off hand I think it was a # 47 or 46 drill bit. The gas port on 1100 magnum model is #49 .073

Do not quite me, I have to look it up.

EA is the barrel date code so it was made October of 1980. The "decoder" is the work BLACK POWDER and that is how you date all later Remington's, not by serial number.

There is other non toxic shot other than steel that is supposed to be okay for older guns.
And that one sure is a beauty.

I have a mod 1100 12 gauge, vent rib, 3 inch chamber, full choke, 30 inch barrel and a 28 inch barrel mod choke 2 and 3/4 inch chamber. Does anyone know where I can find a 28 inch, mod choke 3 inch chambered barrel?

I shoot steel through both barrels no problem.

Sundance I'd check Brownell's for another barrel or even Scheel's or Cabela's .

Ryan I like Bobby even more now I also have a soft spot for Benelli shotguns !

That Remington shotgun is a good choice also as you know a 20 gauge is more than enough for any game birds add a slug barrel and slugs it's a fantastic brush gun !

You're friend along the snare line .

its a Light 20, or LT20, I bought one new many years ago. Used it for grouse and rabbits mostly.
The gun never gave me any problems in the many years I owned it.
One thing it ain't tho, is Light, for a 20 ga semi auto it is heavy.
Got tired of lugging it around and sold it.

I didn't see it mentioned, what choke has it got?

Modified choke.

I got an M2 field the year Bobby was born Allen. It was brand new on his first goose hunt at 8 months old. 16 days at camp that year.

Why not just pay a little extra for some Bismuth? Its only 2 3/4 in a 20 gauge so Id rather shoot something more effective than steel anyway. Boss shells are 35 bucks or so for 20 shells.

That is awesome!!

Does he shoot south paw?

I know even if it’s uncomfortable, it’s best to get young shooters to shoot with their dominant eye rather that what “feels right” at the time.

Fine looking firearm….you can shoot steel through a modified choke….steel can be shot through tighter aftermarket chokes that are made specifically for waterfowl hunting…yours is a fixed choke, your still good to shoot steel….whether you do not is your choice, but think about using one of the other many non-toxic shot alternatives…jmo.

Twenty gauge 1100 guns came in 3 different configurations. First was the full size frame guns (12 gauge frame). They were available in 2 3/4 and 3 inch. The serial number ends with X or N. Then came the LW guns. They were also available in 2 3/4 and 3 inch. They have short tangs, the part that goes into the receiver, 1 3/8 long. These serial numbers end in K or U. Lastly come the LT guns, also available as 2 3/4 and 3 inch. These have 3 3/8 long tangs.

I have a full size frame and LT. The full size gun is a left hand that my oldest daughter uses. The LT is my youngest daughters gun. Both are 2 3/4 inch guns. The full size frame guns are sought after by skeet shooters for a little extra weight. The LW guns are less desirable as they were a little less reliable. The LT has never given us a lick of trouble and runs as smooth as silk.

As far as converting a 3 inch gun to shoot lighter 2 3/4 inch loads, it can be done. I have a 12 gauge that is converted. One difference between 2 3/4 and 3 inch guns that most people don't realize is the sleeve that is driven up and down the magazine tube is heavier on the 3 inch guns. So you might have to fiddle with the extra gas port size. Putting that extra gas port in is not a straight forward job. It needs to be done by someone that knows what they are doing. The gas ports are put in at a compound angle and needs to be put in at the right place. The conversion on my gun uses a tapped hole (2-56un) and set screw to seal off the extra gas port when 3 inch loads are used which is a bit of a pain. The conversion was done by Stan Baker out on the west coast. He passed several years ago. The 11-87 was brought out to eliminate the conversion dance. They had a fair number of issues when they first came out. It was generally felt that Remington took a great gun, the original 1100, made it a pound heavier and less reliable and called it the 11-87. There were a lot of issues with them on the Sporting Clays courses and they fell out of favor rather quickly to be replaced by the Beretta's. I have not heard of many issues now but then again they seem to be relegated to field work for the most part where they must be working well enough.

As far as steel shot is concerned, I would not use a fixed choke barrel. A barrel with Rem Chokes and an extended choke of modified or less using no. 4's would be ok in my opinion. Choke tubes are a lot cheaper to replace than barrels.
