Hi all,
I recently won the above mentioned shotgun. What should i know about using steel shot in an older shotgun? Its got a fixed modified choke. so far ive read that as long as it doesnt haver a full choke there should be no problems.

Sure is a beauty. Reminds me of the fancier guns I seen the old timers using when I was a kid

Ryan, I have a 20 gauge and 12 gauge, same as yours but I’ve never shot steel shot with them.

Can you look up the year made by using the serial number then see if it fell into the years after steel was required?

I doubt that steel shot will harm your modified barrel. I have a 12 mag 30" full that I got in the early 70s, and it handles steel just fine. I also have a Hastings 3" with choke tubes for the same 1100. Handles steel just fine. That 1100 is now 50 years old.

don't do that to that gun!!! If you have to shoot steel use a gun that can be replaced without a treasure hunt needed.

I have an 1100 12 gauge from the 80's. Mine has a slug barrel. I need a bird gun and was told the 1100 had trouble with lighter loads ejecting shells. So the 1187 was born. I got a different gun for birds then instead of buying a bird shot barrel for the 1100. Don't know if I was told the truth, but it was an excuse to buy another gun. Lol.

If you look at the barrel on the left side right in front of the receiver there should be 2 small letters. What are they?

Go ahead and shoot the steel out of it.If it buggers up the choke just hacksaw a few inches off the end.

I had an 1100 with a 30 inch full. Switched to steel and got a ring bulge and end of barrel cocked to the side slightly. Used a copper tubing cutter and cut it off behind the bulge and was very impressed with the pattern after that. Just like BOCO said. I didn't have a vented rib so a pipe cutter worked fine.

We have shot steel out of a bunch of them 1100's with no problem. You may want to get on line and order new O ring for it and a couple spares. The O rings dry out from sitting and turn 1100's into a real fancy looking single popper. I used to take the but plate off and store an extra O ring, oiled in plastic bag, in the stock.

Yessir. I learned about keeping extra o rings on hand when I used to shoot an 11-87 special purpose. I got that one from a good friend in Ohio who has since passed away

It will make a fine grouse gun using lead shot.

I plan to use it for geese whenever the occasion calls for it. I was knocking geese down for about 15 years with my 20 gauge model 1300 before switching to 12 gauge. I prefer 20 to be honest. Less buckshots

Worst case, from steel, in that gun is excessive wear on n the barrel if you shoot a ton. Steel won’t blow that barrel unless there’s something else stuck in it.
