Places that do hundreds of oil changes a week are probably pretty good at it. Much better than joe blow who only does it once or twice a year. YOU WOULD THINK they might even get 95% right but they are all about speed how fast can they do it that is how you make money on an oil change when your paying the guy doing it 11 dollars an hour and the guy working at the McDonalds next door is making 15. they don't measure the oil they have a hose down from the ceiling they dial in an amount if they just did 12 cars in a row that take 4.5 quarts and they get to yours and you need 7.5 you might well be 3 quarts short. they are not checking anything they don't sell so while they are checking that the air filter they want to sell you for 70 dollars +20 to install( but ahh they had to take the old one out to look at it so what install they have to put it back if you say no) that you can buy at Napa for 25 is dirty they aren't greasing anything nor telling you about your hung up brake caliper or transmission leak or anything else. some of them went to sucking the oil out because the had so many drain plug issues the replacement engines was costing them too much. they make about nothing on that oil change it is a loss leader they make $ on the up sell , a system flush , an air filter . joe I have been working on my own car 30 years has one filter number to keep , he triple checks the drain plug , he measures the oil , he checks it after starting the car . so Joe's mess up sure but Joe isn't trying to set keep up to the pace of every 12 minutes while hitting his thc vape. I dont buy that,They wouldnt be in buisness or have so many repeat customers.
Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

most people would never even know if their 5.0l ford f150 was running on 4.5 of 7.5 quarts of oil , it doesn't turn on a light even.

Walmart does mine, 50 some bucks a time. No complaints. X2 but I get the Pit Crew change, it's like 26 bucks, new oil (quaker state) and filter. It costs about that much to buy the oil and filter. I had over 340K on my last truck before I sold it and it's still on the road. The one I'm driving has 230k and still going strong.

Anyone who gets their oil changed at quick lubes, Wal-Mart, etc. Is just asking for trouble.
Do it yourself, that way you know it's right plus you get the oil and filter you want, and you save $$. Wrong on every level. I trust the guys who do hundreds of them over doing it myself, and they do it cheaper than I can do it myself. And they use the oil and filter I want. Three strikes.

Quick-lube places aren't going to do a good job at inspecting your vehicle for the "other" stuff, like tires, brakes, suspension, etc etc, if they inspect them at all. And their fluid flushes that they'll try to sell you are mostly a joke, not to mention the fact that on most modern vehicles you can't just hook a flush machine inline with the trans cooler lines or radiator hoses anymore. This thread is about oil changes, those are all completely different subjects. I wouldn't expect Walmart to inspect my vehicle for brakes and suspension, they do not even offer those services.

lets say you google jiffy lube locations and you start looking at the google map of them , 2 of the 3 I zoomed in on had the tell tale oil slick this was probably the most pronounced. so if you want to still get your oil changed there go ahead ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2024/02/full-35262-207061-jiffy.jpg)

when you see the oil slick where the drive meets the road , the common issue is grabbed the wrong filter very similar to the right filter , the threads same pitch or close enough but the size is a touch larger. so it fits on and screwing it on blind with your arm up the back of an engine an inch form the exhaust manifold and catalytic converter it screws down and stays without leak till your first good bump them pops off and dumps and oil slick. 13/16 x 16 on a 18mm x 1.5 as an example 13/16 is just 2 mm larger fd3387a vs fd9837 they both fit the same 2006 Chevy Malibu , both V6 one is a 3.9l and one a 3.5l ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2024/02/full-35262-207067-jvalvoline.jpg)

That's the point-if you're not getting those things inspected during your most frequent maintenance service, when are you getting them inspected? I guess most people that use quick-lubes just wait for the brakes to start grinding or tie rod to pop off, I supppose.

Wait a minute, you don't trust yourself more than someone else doing a simple oil change on your own vehicle? Every single one on here who has even a small degree of mechanical ability sees holes shot all through this from experience. Save $$ was one of your 3 strikes, are you saying you can't buy your oil & filters in bulk and save money? You might actually get the oil & filter you want, but the biggest incentive for these places is for people who can't wrench or those who cheap out and buy the lowest price oil & filter package which has its own "rewards"....If you buy high quality oil & filters your paying for that, plus the shop labor, so that's not a good deal. Maybe I'm overestimating the mechanical ability of the average joe...Blows my mind though, because a 16 yr old girl can do it, at least that's when my daughters learned. In a 3 year span I've personally witnessed a oil filter that was installed with channellocks, puncturing the filter housing causing a slow leak, and 2 different oil pan drain plugs that were less than finger tight that came out of both Wal-Mart and a quick lube....No thanks!

It had been sitting for a while. I had a 2 hour ride home from where I picked it up, so I stopped right in town at a quick lube to have the oil changed. The dumby tightend the plug too tight and being an aluminum pan, the threads got wrecked. I found out the next time I got it changed. The tech informed me the threads were ruined and I payed for an oil change and a new oil pan. 350 dollar oil changes suck. Lol

My neighbor with a 4 year old Subaru Outback bit on the transmission fluid change at the local Valvoline. They took out the front differential fluid and replaced with automatic transmission fluid. Their insuarance paid for a new transmission, but the oil change owner would not refund his original charge, he said you got the oil change, and a new transmission, two weeks of hassle.

Last time I changed my Explorer’s air filter, I used a magic marker to write the mileage on the filter element. Was expecting the local Ford Quicklane oil change lady to show me a dirty filter and suggest I replace it. Nope, they saw my mileage and never removed the clean filter. I wonder if they keep a box of dirty filters to show unsuspecting customers. I normally get my tires rotated every 5-6k miles when my oil is changed. My dealer is competitive on tires and gives lifetime rotations. I pay a little more for the oil change, but the bundle is a deal. I don’t fall for all the upselling.
My wife drives a Lexus SUV. We trade at 250,000 miles. When we visit the dealership, the sales process is the same each time. The rep begins by taking us on a tour of their service area which is extremely clean and neat. They sell their service reputation before they attempt to sell you a new car.

I never change oil on a lawnmower.Just check to see if there is any in it and top it up when needed. I buy the cheap 150 dollar mowers and run them till the wheels fall off, then buy a new one every 7 or 8 years. I'm on year 18 with a Honda I paid a little over 400 for. Money well spent.
