New Jersey and Oregon were the only two . I think here in Oregon that just changed at least in rural areas anyway

Yeah, in NJ you can't pump your own gas. I live in PA but sometimes work in NJ. I got in trouble for pumping my own gas on that side of the Delaware River.

One minor loophole/gray area for NJ , if you are on a motorcycle , the attendant will hand you the nozzle so you can fill your tank while they operate the pump. I guess there was enough complaints for spilling/dribbling gas on the nice painted finish on the motorcycle's gas tank.
For those who don't ride a bike , there is a right way and a wrong way to fill a motorcycle's gas tank without spilling some. Sure as heck you don't want to spill gas on a guy's pricey new Harley.

Just what are they saving by not letting you pump gas? We did not even have to pay before we pumped until the oil boom. Then the stations all claimed they were having to many dive offs, and now we pay before we pump.

I think it was pushed through to create jobs , at least for NJ. The politicians claimed it was for safety. Typical.

I pulled into a gas station in Oregon several years ago and attempted to pump my own gas. An attendant ran out in a panic, he said that if I pumped the gas I might blow up the station. I think he was actually convinced of that.

His panic more likely was if he got caught letting you pump your own gas he could lose his job.

I'm from Oregon and after I retired from the military I made an appearance there and went to fill up myself, out of habit. Man the clerk went into a panic and gave me a 15 minute lecture on why I shouldn't be touching that pump. Boiled down to saving jobs. Oregon is a little behind the times. Fast food employees are next at $15 bucks an hour. That's another story I'll save for later. Today you just have to smile and wave , cus it's a joke out there! I just drove through Oregon. I sure wish they would have pumped the gas,,,,,checked the air pressure,,,,,cleaned the windows,,, BUT sadly No…. I even had to make my own coffee,,,, (No!!! 3 shot breve moca for you)

NJ is probably afraid they will steal the pump!! Lol.....true.... A few years back , NJ had much lower gas taxes for the area , almost 25 cents a gallon less. If I was heading that way , I would try to arrive with a near empty gas tank to take advantage of it. I even would take a bunch of gas cans to fill as well. Unfortunately , they raised the tax a couple years ago and it isn't as much of a difference anymore.

NJ voters voted this dumb law down but the Union got it changed back to the way it was.

There have been at least two attempts in my memory to change the Oregon law but Oregon voters voted it down each time decisively. The main reason was that it provided employment opportunities. This was back when jobs were kind of scarce.

It would be kinda nice to have stations that pump gas for you and wash your windshield. Hard to find in this state. On the other end of the spectrum I just saw where an all robotic restaurant is a reality in California. I would be more concerned about jobs being lost then jobs being saved.
Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

Around here you have to pump your own gas. Some stations are pre-pay while others aren't.
The first bottles of Coca Cola contained 3.5 grams of cocaine. That's how our grandparents were able to walk to school uphill both ways in the snow.

Why would it be law that u can't pump ur own gas I believe in NJ it was to preserve jobs , didn't want to put the job of filling station attendant out. they generally site some safety thing also like people will spill gas or use the wrong container ect.. so to have a person who knows how to pump the gas safely .... mostly I think it comes down to 2 things , politicians saw it as a job loss and they started hand wringing about the possibilities of safety issues that just never panned out in other places

I don't think that's correct Pete. Way back in the late 40's a guy in NJ started letting folks pump their own gas. Since he didn't have to pay attendants he could sell it cheaper than other, full-service stations.
It started to catch on and the other guys got mad and lobbied politicians to stop the practice. Some powerful palms must have been greased in some shady backroom deals and the full-service guys got their way.
The Retail Gasoline Dispensing Safety Act was born and it made it illegal for drivers to pump their own gas. It was disguised as a "public safety" act. If that is to be believed then one must also believe that NJ and OR are the last two states that consider their citizens to be too stupid to safely pump their own gas.
At least Oregon recognizes that some of their rural folks are bright enough to fill up without causing disasters but not their citidiots, they still can't.
Eh...wot?

Like you Bearcat I've been pumping my own gas for the last 30 years here in Oregon with my CFN card.
And I kind of chuckle at everybody that seems perturbed that there is a state that doesn't allow self pumping. If you don't live here why do you care? And why in Sam Hill does every state have to be the same? When there have been ballot measures to allow self pumping (here in Oregon) it has always been big oil that was the proponents. Why does Oregon have to bow down to big oil?

At least Oregon recognizes that some of their rural folks are bright enough to fill up without causing disasters but not their citidiots, they still can't. the realities of the financials of it and how it gets sold to the public and getting mad at competition for undercutting a price , they did minimum mark up here , just made it so that they can't sell for less than X more than cost. unless your at a private gas selling club , costco can sell lower than minimum mark up and it drives the price down for about 3 miles around a Costco gas station.

They have nothing to do with you pumping your own gas or not. They just pull it out of the ground, refine it, and deliver it to you but somehow they are the problem. You might want to look at who you keep voting into office.

Oregon is now a choice state. You can pump your own gas. This is state wide now. But at most stations there are still attendants thawing pump it for you.

It seems to be loosening up in NJ too. We pumped our own boat gas every day there for a week at several different service stations. It seems the attendants aren't interested in filling up boats, motorcycles, gas cans etc. This was last month
What is a crime is the stupid safety catch on their nozzles. You can't just hold down the trigger and pump gas. There is a lip on every nozzle that has to be mashed down in order for the nozzle to work. Works fine pumping gas in a car, but makes it quite the pain to fill up a 6 gallon tank all the way in the floor of a jon boat
Gotta live up to the nickname...
