I don’t care about world hunger, this is the last of my Hubbard squash, there is a lot to process.

I've never heard of a Hubbard squash. How are you processing it?

This my second Hubbard, but we ate a dozen buttercups and various other winter squash.

Bake it, chunks of it with the skin on, and either freeze it up to cook with later, or use it like I do...browning up in butter with sausage for breakfast.

Do you still get to go in the boat and ice fishing? Or do you have to stay home and cook and clean? Your squash looks good. I may try growing a few Hubbard's. I like squash and it looks like they keep well. How do you store them?

My girlfriend cooks them up. I keep under the stairwell next to the basement where they can store hopefully at 59-59 degrees

I put a wood stove in the basement. If it is fired it will be 70-80 degrees in the basement. If it is not fired it will be in the 50's. Do you think in the high 30's is to clod to store squash. I coup put them in the coal/wood bin if not. I notice you didn't say you get to go in the boat or ice fishing any more. Does she have a lot of money? My Dad always said if you have to have a girl friend, find one with a lot of money.

prolonged freezing 30f cause the area around the skin to break and then they dry out from the inside. mid 30's is ok but not swings of temps
hard freezing they just collapse
homesteads around here with 6 ft dirt basements put horse blankets over them and they were still good till July next year, do not put near potatoes something between the two triggers white mold on the squash.

Cousin did 30 years of research on varieties breeds at a Agri research station till it was shut down. Always was worth the fall trip to see them and trade some game for " the new variety"

The coal/wood bin has less temperature swing than the basement with the wood stove. It may freeze in there in places at time when it is -20 to -30f out. May need some blankets for added protection.

She's moneyed up, lol. I can fish anytime ice or water..

Squash go bad earlier if it's too cool.

The "50 to 59 degrees" is as per the University of Minnnesota...according to my sister, about 30 years ago when I asked about squash storage.

MJM.... you could make an insulated box to put them in a warm area, and run a plastic pipe to it from a basement window, and shove a rag in it or some other damper to control letting cooler air into it.

Anybody ever try storing outdoors in a shed wrapped in old sleeping bags? Or not enough ventilation once wrapped?

Les good to hear you can still fish. It is a shame you could not have moneyed up though. I wasn't smart enough to listen to my Dad. A lot more of what he said make sense now.
I keep squash about four months, but wish I could stretch it out. I would plant more if I could. I don't think you can keep them wrapped in old sleeping bags here. It was 9 below this morning. I don't think squash put off much heat to stay warm.
