A guy north of me has sheep, ducks and chickens running lose all over his place. So he keeps traps set year around for at least the last 6 or 8 years that I know of. He's got a couple sets about 20 foot off the road. His sets must be a pretty well guarded secret because I've never seen another like it or read about anything close.

These aren't sets for the beginners, more for the experienced wolfers that really know their stuff and how the coyotes think and work a set.

[Linked Image]

Most of time he uses 6 to 8 eggs scattered around for bait not a dead sheep. For a change up he'll sometimes set an egg between the jaw and the pan.

What’s not pictured are the 3 buried, well blended traps hidden amongst the others. Using decoy traps as guiding…. Genius!

Looks like a coon magnet. Interesting idea though. Expensive though with half a dozen traps at one set. I'm not knocking the guy. If it works it works.

There was a sheep operation on my line in Kansas. The fella lived in a Ford Econoline van in his pasture with some hedge and cedar trees nearby among his flock of sheep. Some lambs slept with him in his van when some were in poor shape cold/wet when they were born. He used to trap the same way in his pasture. Several traps set around the carcasses as shown. He caught coyote, skunk, coon and oppossum. Guess he was an old wolfer also. Must have taught this other feller.

I bet you knew this other fella Seth. He has been gone now for some time. He was near the Harm"s cattle operation within a section or two.

Exposed Baits and Traps set close together is guaranteed to catch all kinds of Protected Birds/Eagles!!

A trapped Eagle looks bad even on private land.
Traps should be set 30’ away from the carcasses.
It’s the Law in many western states. So be careful.

Boys that in the pic is how he sets. No covered traps at set. And as Bob stated he catches coyotes this way.

Bob I think it's the same guy. He's still alive but has moved to town. Comes out to farm regularly. I wondered if you had seen his sets and would recognize them.

I posted this because any time someone says something like this set works or this lure/bait works because I've caught coyotes using it or asks if this set will work or this bait will work I think of the way this guy sets. Same when someone says you don't need to this or that to catch coyotes.

Pretty much any method or attractant will "work", some things and some methods just aren't as effective or as efficient as others.

This guy doesn't think you need to cover traps to catch coyotes and he's right because he catches some without doing it.

I would bet he's actually caught more coyotes in a year using this set than anyone has in the tire set.

Think his secret to making this work is perfect pan tension and 13 swivels.

Boone pm me if you want to know how he sets his pan tension . The rest of you are going to have to pay to learn the secret unless your within 250 miles of Marion Ks then I'm not sharing at all.

I have seen this before, an old timer that's been dead for several years had this same looking set except was a tied down deer leg. He told me that winter he caught 32 Coyotes off of 1 set . When I questioned him about the un covered traps he said occasionally one would poop on a trap, I figured he was pulling my leg , maybe not.

I'll say this ... if I hadn't seen the guys sets myself and know he catches a few coyotes I wouldn't believe it myself

I have also heard stories like these years ago. The only way i can see it is if animals are on a carcass at night & maybe tearing at it & stomping around wildly.

But to prove it to me someone would have to do it and set up trail cameras & show me

Till that day.....

If a coyote has never had a reason to shy away from a random piece of steel, why would it be frightened of one which it can clearly see?
If a coyote has been pinched by a trap, no amount of careful stabilizing or blending will fool it. It will approach the site, scratch at the ground six feet away, and veer off, avoiding the site completely.
This ole boy likely does not catch educated coyotes with those kind of sets, but I'll bet he does alright on the uneducated ones. Now if he pinches one it will be game over for him catching that coyote.
When I set foothold traps for fox crawling under chain link fence, I bed the trap but don't cover it. That fox is looking for a stable, flat spot under that fence to step on. On an uncovered trap, that would be the pan. I was surprised how well this works for fox. I haven't had an opportunity to try in on coyotes.

Looks like a great way to catch birds, but yes, uneducated coyotes will step on exposed traps. A catch a handful of them every season in my extremely flashy and heavily lured exposed walkthroughs I set for bobcats.

If traps work like the Antis say......I would have no fingers.

I’m sorry. But this^^^^^ is not true. I made a living for years catching coyotes with 3 toes or less. Some of us deal with messed up educated coyotes on a daily basis. When in South Alabama. I used to follow lots of messed up coyotes. Everyone in the south. That could drive to a Co op and buy a duke trap and dig a dirt hole was trapping and toe pinching coyotes. Once. On a 14 day job I had 6 out of 21 coyotes that had = Missing toe or several missing toes. A man has to just figure out a way to win !!!!! Coyotes are individuals! So smart some dumb

I would urge you to remove this post. No way should this type of set be championed by responsible trappers for obvious reasons already stated. This set would make you eligible for a $6250 fine in my state.

I read a book. About red wolfs in Texas. Lots were caught with bare traps around cows in the 1900s. They just set them. And caught wolfs. Two words that don’t go in a sentence with coyotes???? Always and never

I will say for the beginners as stayed before in this thread this set is one that runs a high risk of catching non targets life birds. It's legal here but I wouldn't set it as you can just as easy catch target animal back aways.

I only posted for the learning aspect of not seeking or settling for what "works" rather seek or use what works best or is most effective.

Only way I see a coyote getting caught in that set is if they just got comfortable with the traps and accidentally got caught playing with them. Heck I get pinched a time or 2 a year when I let my guard down.

You would catch three buzzards for every one coyote with that here.

That set is illegal here in Nebraska. Cannot set leg holds like that within 30 feet of bait in plain site like tthat carcass.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

Hey now, I catch a couple coyotes every year in exposed sets!

I think we’d be surprised how many traps have been set just like that, wired off to a leg.

Illegal here, but I have seen that exact set described and/or sketched in several old books. Although they usually advocated bedding and covering the traps. The trap placement was the same though. A hundred or a hundred and fifty years ago catching predatory birds wasn't a big deal, in fact it was desirable if you were a sheepherder, eagles prey on lambs.

First thing I noticed in the set was unleveled pans also!

I have caught some OLD coyotes in sets with exposed pans. After a big rain. Sometimes
To get out and cover a pan. Leaves to much disturbed ground. So I wait. I catch coyotes with parts of the trap exposed from time to time. A well bedded trap though. IF a coyote feels a trap wobbles. It often digs it up. I laughed when I hear. How smart or keen a coyote is that digs up sets. A smart coyote ? Well. She just LEAVES!! Smart Coyote? Kills and leaves. Maybe comes back ? THAT is the smart 1

Had a neighbor used to throw two exposed traps in the crawl unders in his sheep fence. For “real tough ones” he’d use three.

His “good traps” were double longs, most of it was old jumps and undersprings.

I don’t think he got many coyotes but he did get some fox with some degree of regularity.

My fear is some dumb kids will see that and try it! I know a couple dumb kids who set three traps "for coyotes" just like that next to guts from a beef. First check they had three bald eagles. That was 50 years ago. We used a coat over the eagles to get them out of the traps. Don't try this at home kids! Not even funny to post something irresponsible as that.

You guys seriously think if someone was going to try this set they couldn't think it up on their own? I'd actually bet it would be the first set the vast majority of beginners would come up with on their own....

Hoooeeey! Imagine trying to retrieve those traps after that critter bursts and oozes all over the ground! Might get some good traps free if your willing to clean them!

When that happens (not if), that ole boy will just leave the traps there until next year. smile

Seth I make a set a guy we both know taught me. It’s a carcass set but not quite that obvious smile I can set it in 2 minutes and it tears them up. That being said I don’t have to worry about birds out here. Thanks for posting. Good way not to do it

Maybe, but i don't think it needs to be advertised here as a good set where kids are welcomed to join and learn on this site.

That's where trappers education comes into play. This is something that should be taught NOT to do EVER.

Exactly !

That set will catch every vulture that flies over it

I'll track the old boy down and tell him how offended we are. I'll wack him with a purse too to shame him a little. But don't worry I won't hit him very hard as he's using a walker and I don't want anyone to think we over reacted.

Seton used a similar set back in 1894 when he trapped Lobo,Blanca and the rest of the currumpaw pack.
Except Seton covered his traps carefully.

Really??
If your so proud of your boy's comedic skills than maybe you should talk him into plastering this image and some even more pathetic photos he has laying around all over social media on April fools day. That way he can get so many more laughs and kill trapping a little faster.

Do y’all even think before you post something? Some of ya need a chill pill, this kind of crap gets old quick. Humor must be a lost art nowdays, I’m done here, too much stupid for me.

Thinking before you post...wow how ironic. Two stupid things on this thread. 1...posting a pic of a really bad set then stating what a great set it is. On a forum where people come to learn. Number 2 is the [ click ] as in the good ole boys club agrees with it. Smh
Three things should come to mind here, discretion, common sense and ethics.

Common sense would be to delete the pic or maybe this entire thread.
