Sometimes if the springs seem weak you can hammer (firm, but light) a pipe into the convex part of the spring to expand that "point" just a touch to make it more round. This can improve the tension, just have to be careful...and you may be referencing something totally different.

I do every year. Takes more waxed or dry dirt but they work great in frozen conditions. Prefer #3 size

Ever get that PIT#3 on that #2?

The #3 will fit on a #2 but you have to use the#2 weld on bracket and move it towards the dog until the pan is centered. You will also have to shorten the dog. The oversized pans will need a little taken off at the spring eyes. They are a little close. Regular pit pans will work fine.

I'm putting#2dls pit pan on a #4dls. I think it will make it a better beaver trap.

I put an oversized#3 pan on a #2

The pan doesn't need cut at the spring eyes. But the dog is short. Lol
I also put a #2 pit pan on a #4
[Linked Image]
Cutting the bracket and a longer dog would center it though

It’s funny that people have mentioned that they want to watch videos with people using long springs and older traps in the field. My buddy and I are starting a YouTube channel this coming season and will have a section where we strictly use long spring and jumps. We just purchased an entire trapping collection from an estate, and WOW!!! Almost 650 traps of various sizes in long spring, jump, double under B&L’s, some old Victor coils, stop loss…. All kinds of work to do with mods, but can’t wait to get them holding fur!

This was the first beaver we caught in a #4 Victor that we got with that pile of old traps. 41 pound female, the bag on the drowner was too light and she pulled it up to the bank, then pulled the stake out… the one thing she didn’t pull was her two toes out of that DLS. I’m sold!!! We will be doing mods on these, and they will become a staple in our trapping arsenal!!!

I love this thread and thought I ought to post a little to revive it. I have many many coilspring traps and I use fewer every year.
