Overall I was happy with the few pelts I attempted to tan myself. Its definitely a learning curve and I know now what I'd do different. They are all soft tanned but on the bigger boar coon I definitely could have shaved the head and neck down better. Sandpaper also would have helped with the fibers left on the leather. And I didn't have access to corn cob grit in my local area so I used sawdust which stained the leather, but I actually kind of like that look. A few other things as well, but for my first time I am happy.

They look good. This was my first year tanning. My son and I really enjoyed it. We did one rat and a couple coons. I ran into the same thing with the bigger boar coon, but used a dremel with sanding disk to thin it out working slowly. Overall we were pleased. I wanted to get a couple early ground hogs to add to what my son calls "our collection" but my timing was off. I think he is looking forward to the tanning part just as much if not more than trapping next year.

Late caught or summer groundhogs are good to practice on to make buckskin or veg tan.
The leather is strong and light.(but thick in the neck shoulder area).
